Cape Amarandos Skopelos

2 minutes to read

Cape Amarandos is located in the south of the Skopelos island about nine kilometers from the Skopelos capital Town between the Stafilos beach and the Velanio beach just before the characteristic Agnontas port, a small village where you can eat the freshest fish of the island seen that fishermen prefer this natural shelter to moor their boats after going out to sea to fish for squid, lobster and prawns.

Agnontas derives from the Olympic runner Agnontas or Agnon who, when he returned victorious in 596 BC from Olympia, the area was dedicated to him, taking his name. Also in modern times, Agnontas beach owes its popularity to the well known movie “Mamma Mia” where several scenes were filmed. Another name is Tumblewweds, an ancient Inca sacred plant that grows in the area and never withers.

A wonderful inlet with a small rocky promontory where two curved pine trees seem to want to embrace the sea from above the rock. The waters here are of an intense blue, even more amplified by the white of the rocks and the verdant vegetation that surrounds the area, giving it an almost exotic flavour. The Skopelos inhabitants call it Aramandos which means pool precisely because of its blue and almost always flat waters. Once there were three pine trees, one unfortunately fell due to a strong wind and in 2016 some unfortunate people set fire to the whole area for not being careful during a picnic, burning the entire forest behind. Luckily nature continues to take its course and everything is slowly being reforested.

Since there is no beach, people usually come to Cape Amarandos for diving thanks to its exciting seabed of rocks sculpted by the sea and for fishing. On the high south of the promontory a spectacular wall that reaches a height of thirty meters. If you are not expert swimmers it would be better to avoid it, simply enjoy the wonderful panorama and what our mother earth has been able to give us.

How to get to Cape Amarandos

Reaching Cape Amarandos is not difficult. First of all you have to head (preferably with your own transport) towards Agnontas following the road signs. At a certain point, when you reach the village, you will find a dirt road with several crossroads. Always keep to the right and through lush trees, breathtaking views and small coves, you will arrive at your destination. They are approximately six hundred meters where you will be immersed in an almost magical forest.

Just pay attention to the vipers that inhabit the area, so strictly closed shoes. A point to be absolutely included among the things to do and see in Skopelos, in a fairytale landscape, intact nature, good food and a beach where you can relax.
