Vourvoulos Beach Santorini

2 minutes to read

The hidden and almost unknown Vourvoulos beach, we find it in the north-eastern part of the scenic Santorini Island about seven kilometers from the capital Thira.

This whole coastal area offers coasts with strange shapes as they are towards the open sea and very subject to winds as well as atmospheric events which, like skilled sculptors, create particular cliffs that can only be seen in Santorini.

Vourvoulos beach has a beach of dark sand mixed with pebbles given its purely volcanic origin, crystal clear waters, a turquoise sea that fades to intense blue and seabed that drops very quickly therefore not suitable for families with children and non-swimmers. experts. To make everything even more difficult at times are the massive waves that form especially when the wind becomes overbearing blowing on the Cyclades Islands and in the presence of many sea urchins on the seabed so it would be better if you wore shoes like this to enter the water ' so as not to hurt yourself and ruin your holiday because of some annoying sting.

It is partly equipped with a few completely free sunbeds and umbrellas made available in the small but fairytale Taverna Limanaki where you can sit while admiring the majestic Aegean and savor delicious dishes based on fresh fish and local recipes rather than the classic Greek tradition. A small port on the right welcomes the fishing boats from which going north you can also reach the wild beach of Xiropigado where at a distance of about three hundred and fifty meters is the church of Taxiárchis Panormítis. In the opposite direction to the south is the Kanaraki beach of small black pebbles, Exo Gialos with its small caves and finally the long beach of Karterados.

As far as accommodation is concerned, you can find stupendous villas rather than hotels or pensions within the reach of all budgets. There aren't many, so if you want to stay in this very quiet part of your holiday in Santorini, it would be better to book well in advance.

Vourvoulos beach is bordered behind by a classic dry stone wall and a row of beech trees that allow you to shelter during the hottest hours of the day. Behind the homonymous amphitheater-shaped village on a slope that dominates this whole area of the Santorini island with a wonderful view of the wide plains, the vineyards up to the banks and imposing dark cliffs dominated by white windmills. There are characteristic cafes, bars, taverns and walking along the paved paths you will come across beautiful houses with classic Cycladic architecture and well-kept courtyards. You can take the opportunity to visit the Church of Agios Efstatios in the village square, built in 1985 at the expense of the inhabitants where a great feast is celebrated on December 13th, and also the Church of Agios Panteleimonas which is located in the cemetery of the settlement, between Pano (Upper) Vourvoulos and Kato (Lower) with its typical blue dome.

How to get to Vourvoulos Beach

Definitely better with your own vehicle so you can maybe take advantage of the day with a visit to the nearby beaches. Just head northeast on the main paved road and follow the road signs. A convenient free parking is at your disposal to leave your car or scooter.

Vourvoulos beach respects the true essence of the island made up of barren and wild landscapes where the hand of Mother Nature has created a unique environment in the world and for this alone it deserves to be included in the list of things to do in Santorini and given its nature peaceful perfect for moments away from the hustle and bustle and mass tourism.
