Mesa Pigadia Beach Santorini

2 minutes to read

The Mesa Pigadia Beach, we find it in the southwestern part of the Santorini Island about fifteen kilometers from Thira the capital and close to the famous Red beach, the White beach and the beautiful Akrotiri lighthouse.

Secluded in a small bay, Mesa Pigadia beach is not very beaten by mass tourism as it is a bit difficult to reach but precisely for this reason, despite the fact that the island of Santorini is well-known and everyone talks about it giving advice, it remains a a small, almost secret, still unspoiled treasure chest where you can spend a quiet day at the beach away from the crowds.

A reduced coastline made of black volcanic pebbles given its origin (it has many similarities with the Vlychada beach just to give you an idea), crystal clear and clear waters, a sea with an intense blue color and seabed that descend fairly quickly as on the other hand. the whole island as it is the result of an underwater volcanic eruption that created this corner of paradise. Think of Santorini as a funnel formed by the lava coming out of the abyss and you will realize the reason for the depths of the waters.

All around high clear cliffs of magma sculpted by atmospheric events that like a tender embrace protect it from the winds making it perfect for spending moments dedicated to idleness and tanning. On the Mesa Piagadia beach you can see the famous "syrmata" or also called "varkadies", caves dug by man where fishermen sheltered their boats during the winter with the different colored doors that were used to identify the owners. In the Cyclades Islands this type of construction can be found almost everywhere, the Milos Island is an example. One of these caves in particular appears right in the nearby White Beach but you have to be very adventurous to decide to take this step...

Mesa Piagadia beach is equipped with a few sunbeds and umbrellas if you want to be comfortable otherwise you can decide to put your towel in a free area but be careful, it would be better to have an inflatable mattress unless you have fakir blood in your DNA. Rock shoes are also recommended, the stones have different sizes and walking on them is not quite as comfortable as for entering the water. As for the restaurant, you will have two options, either to sit at the Akro a place that reflects the elegance of the island of Santorini and therefore with much higher prices, or in the simpler but fantastic family-run tavern where you can enjoy some excellent dishes of classic Greek and local cuisine based on fresh fish as well as dishes made with ancient recipes. Here the prices are decidedly lower but we guarantee you that you eat very well and the scenery is truly idyllic with its balcony overlooking the Aegean.

For snorkelers, Mesa Piagadia beach is a fun playground. Its rocks and its hidden caves are an interesting pastime to be explored to discover the fantastic underwater world made of colorful fish so remember to bring with you snorkel, fins, mask and maybe an underwater camera to immortalize the wonderful underwater world.

How to reach Mesa Pigadia Beach

It is not impossible to specify it, you just need to have a little foresight especially on the choice of the means to get there. We recommend a scooter, a quad or a 4x4 as the last kilometer of the road is unpaved, winding and steep. Always remember that usually the rental does not cover with insurance any type of damage done in routes not marked on the maps or off the main road so when you rent the vehicle remember to ask for this thing that will be valuable information and will avoid unscheduled expenses. during your holiday in Greece.

So keep Akrotiri as your reference point in a southwest direction and before entering the village follow the signs for Mesa Pigadia. Just after a few kilometers, you will meet a dirt road that extends for about another kilometer, at the end you will find the parking lot where you can leave your vehicle and the beach.

A valid alternative to reach Mesa Pigadia beach is by sea. Or rent a boat yourself, or if you are among the lucky ones to have your own, and finally through a day trip that you can find in any tourist agency on the island.

Last but not least, if you love walking it is on foot.

If you need or even not a day in an uncrowded area, without too much noise, with suggestive views, you must absolutely include Mesa Pigadia beach among the things to do in Santorini, it will also be a great opportunity to combine a visit to the famous archaeological site of Akrotiri, or at its spectacular lighthouse perhaps at sunset, and again at the Venetian castle one of the five existing on the island.
