Koloumbos Beach Santorini

2 minutes to read

Koloumbos beach or also called Cape Colombo is one of the most secret and secluded beaches of Santorini.

We find it in the north east of the island about four kilometers from Oia and about ten from the capital Fira or Thira as you prefer. A long and narrow coastline of black gray sand mixed with small pebbles and protected by spectacular cliffs shaped by the wind and salt. The sea is of a clear and crystalline blue color with a rather shallow seabed compared to the other beaches of Santorini, but with rather strong currents that often and willingly create waves therefore only recommended for expert swimmers. Among the cliffs there is a cave to be discovered and snorkelers will find a very interesting marine environment so don't forget your fins, mask and an underwater camera!

Being secluded and not so noble it is among the favorites of LGBT and naturists who can enjoy this magical place in complete tranquility where nature has still remained intact and uncontaminated.

Poorly equipped, some sun beds and umbrellas so the rule is always that those who arrive first stay better, offers visitors a small tavern also with limited places but where you will surely find something to quench your thirst. From experience we recommend that you still bring water and food in case there is no room so as not to remain fasting. From the cliff you can enjoy a wonderful view over the whole area and on days when the sky is particularly clean you can also see the island of Ios.

According to volcanologists, the only active underwater volcano that exploded in the past is located in the waters that bathe the Koloumbos beach, while to the east of the beach a crater with a diameter of two kilometers and a depth of five hundred meters is visible which gives a very good idea of power of the cataclysm that hit the island and the Aegean interior in 1600 BC

How to get to Koloumbos Beach

It is possible to reach it only with a rental vehicle, which is a car or scooter is fine. Unfortunately, given its location, it is not served by public transport and perhaps also for this reason it is not so busy, you need to be independent or opt for a taxi. You must first head north east and get to the promontory following the road signs. Take the dirt path (attention is narrow but feasible) that will accompany you in the middle of a wild landscape rich in native flora until you reach the beautiful beach with transparent waters where you will dive immediately guaranteed!

For an alternative day to discover the wonders of the island that are not only the characteristic villages perched on the cliffs, breathtaking views of the incredible Caldera or spectacular sunsets to be immortalized in a souvenir photo to be framed and watched with melancholy, but also wild and intact nature like to its origins to feel one with the universe. Include a day at Cape Colombo beach among the things to do in Santorini for a break of tranquility and recharge your batteries.
