Red Beach Santorini

2 minutes to read

Red Beach is one of the most beautiful and famous beaches of Santorini. We find it in the southwestern part of the island, close to the archaeological site of Akrotiri considered one of the most important in the world dating back to the Bronze and Minoan periods.

Also called Kokkini Paralia (kokkino in Greek means red, paralia beach), the name suggests that we are faced with something extraordinary and unique. A small and narrow coast of sand and small stones of volcanic origin in garnet and black color, clear and turquoise waters with a bottom that drops quickly. Behind the spectacular red cliffs that are constantly changing with the atmospheric phenomena changing shape every year. The particular color is given by the presence of iron minerals which during the terrible explosion of 1628 BC gave rise to the wonderful Santorini Island.

The beach has very small dimensions and being much sought after by visitors, it is often very crowded, a suggestion go there early in the morning when everyone is still dozing so that you can fully enjoy this unusual beach. It is enclosed in a bay that offers several much quieter and less frequented coves where you can enjoy a sunny day.

Given its position, the Red Beach is protected from the winds so perfect when Aeolus decides to annoy him with his whims. It is also perfect for snorkelers as the seabed is made of rocks that in some points emerge from the sea as if by magic. Here a lively flora and fish fauna will be a fun and a continuous discovery.

The Red Beach is partly equipped with sun beds and umbrellas, but there are not many so if you want comfort it is better to arrive on time. There are a few kiosks before reaching it where you will find cool drinks, quick snacks and fresh fruit. If you prefer a full meal, you can always sit in one of the typical taverns that, in addition to serving traditional Greek dishes based on fresh products, also please you with a wonderful view. Given the proximity to the Akrotiri village, you can take the opportunity to pay a visit to this interesting site, one of the most beautiful in the world and where the searches are not yet finished.

The Red Beach can be reached via a path with a walk of about ten minutes. The road is not really the best as it is a little steep and dirt, better to wear comfortable shoes to avoid slipping and getting hurt. With flip-flops or slippers it is still feasible but at your own risk.

How to get to the Red Beach

Just head southwest following the signs for Arkrotiri and Red Beach. It is possible to get there either with your own vehicle which can be a car or a scooter that you can leave in the parking lot just above, or even by boat starting from Fira or Akrotiri every half hour. The ticket can be done directly on the hull. Another alternative if you do not have a rental vehicle is by bus that always from Akrotiri and Fira offers several trips every day. Always check the timetables.

A beach to put on the list of things to see in Santorini, you can't miss it would be a great shame!
