Getting around on Samos

2 minutes to read

Samos is a fairly large island. Its extension is around 480 square kilometers with a length of 44 kilometers by thirteen. It's not huge but not that small either.

A green island with large valleys planted with vineyards where the famous Moscato is produced, perfect for an aperitif or a dessert, wooded areas dense with forests, a Mediterranean scrub with many plant and animal species where elephants lived ten million years ago, short-necked giraffes and hyenas, breathtaking views at every corner, beaches bathed by a bright turquoise Aegean, inland villages that look like cribs, that's what to expect from Samos.

With a very personal identity, Samos exudes a calm and relaxed atmosphere while time seems to pass much more slowly than in other Greek Islands. Vathy, the capital, is full of delicious taverns and ouzeries where you can stop and enjoy good food accompanied by respectable native distillates, to go to Pythagorion, a Unesco world heritage site with that sophisticated flavor and where yachts love to dock and every morning the excursions by sea to discover the stupendous beaches and hidden corners, to arrive at the Manolates village surrounded by high mountains and from where you can admire unforgettable views, to end up at the remote Drakei village where the island ends, near two beaches to say the Mikro Seitani beach and the Megalo Seitani beach are not very fabulous, difficult to reach but with a natural environment that would make anyone pale.

Getting around Samos is easy, you can choose various options and this will always and exclusively depend on your budget rather than your desire to discover.

Car: perfect for families with children and for the laziest. You will get everywhere and the roads are quite good. Keep in mind that some stretches are in the mountains, therefore with the presence of hairpin bends and heart-pounding overhangs, therefore caution and reduced speed.

Scooter: let's say that two wheels are perhaps the best choice. Among the winding roads you can certainly move better but be careful opt for large engine capacities of no less than 150 cc, even better higher so as to face the climbs in total tranquility.

Public transport: the public road network is good, there are many rides that cover several even more isolated places. Plan better by consulting the timetables carefully. For information you can write by mail that you will find on the site below.
