Kallithea Baths Rhodes

2 minutes to read

The Kalithea Baths or Calitea are located about ten kilometers from the capital Rhodes. Restored between 2002 and 2007, the beautiful complex now houses exhibitions, concerts and events.

Known since the Doric era (VI-V century BC), then passing from the Roman period, to the Byzantine era up to the Saint John Knights , it was called by the Tsiflonero locals because of the properties of purgative water. Initially it was a very difficult place to reach and those who ventured to enjoy the benefits were hosted in nearby monasteries which unfortunately no longer exist in our day.

Designed by the Italian architect Pietro Lombardi on commission from the Governor Mario Lago who, brought together a scientific team to study the healing properties of the waters and decided to restore the complex, were inaugurated in 1929 after a careful reconstruction with the participation of King Vittorio Emanuele III . During the Second World War, unfortunately they were heavily damaged and for several years used as a deposit for umbrellas and deck chairs by the nearby beaches. In 2002 the restoration works started again and in 2007 they finally returned to their splendor. The Kalithea thermal baths are presented today as a sumptuous art deco spa complex with an impressive patio and an abundance of pavilions, halls, corridors, colonnades, stairs and mosaics, all immersed in a natural setting of extraordinary beauty.

Contrary to what the name suggests, the The Kalithea Baths are not a spa or a thermal center, the term terme derives from the fact that in ancient times thermal waters flowed here, but at the moment there are no establishments that exploit them.

After your visit to the spa, stay in the area for a dip in Kalithea beach, bathed by an incredible blue sea. The sea is rocky and the water is clear but immediately ideal for snorkeling. much loved by tourists, but also frequented by the Greeks.

The bay is well equipped as in many other  Rhodes areas you can place your towel on a rock without problems. The bay is far from wild and nearby you can have lunch or have a drink even under an umbrella.

The thermal baths are open every day from 8.00 to 20.00
