Prassonissi Beach Rhodes

2 minutes to read

Prassonissi beach, where the Levante Sea (the Mediterranean) meets and merges with the Aegean Sea, is one of the reasons why this beautiful beach is famous.

It is located exactly on the most extreme southern tip of the island of Rhodes about ninety-two kilometers from the capital Rodos Town and forty if you arrive from the wonderful Lindos.

How to reach Prassonissi Beach?

Easy, you just have to follow the signs that lead to Lindos and then again towards the final destination. Yes we say that it is not a real walk given the distance, but during the journey you can enjoy the beauty of the island of Rhodes which changes constantly becoming increasingly wild and desert, an unforgettable and unique scenario.

Another reason to which it owes its fame is that Prassonissi is the Mecca of lovers of Kite Surf and Surf. Already in this area the Greek wind Meltemi is perpetually stable and gives whole days of fun to the sportsmen who with their kites fill the sky with color and with the acrobatics they cheer the swimmers.

The beach has a long and wide sandy shoreline bathed by extremely clean and crystalline waters, with shallow waters and a turquoise color, therefore also suitable for families with small children. In reality, the beach is made up of two bays, the one to the west with calm sea and the one to the east exposed to winds, which end in a small island that can be reached by swimming or on foot, depending on the tide, a typical phenomenon and master of this small corner. of paradise. In Greek, Prassonissi means Green Island because in winter the storms, the winds and the tide completely cover the corridor that connects the two strips of land and causes the rock where the lighthouse is located to become a peninsula island.

It is very well equipped, nothing is missing, sunbeds and umbrellas for relaxing and swimming, windsurfing, surfing and all water sports equipment, a minimarket for those who love DIY, some apartments that the lucky ones can book well in advance and two large taverns where you can take shelter from the wind and stock up on something fresh to drink or to eat some local delicacies and classic Greek cuisine. Ample free parking is available before the beach.

A walk is a must to the Prassonissi Lighthouse, erected in 1890 and fourteen meters high which indicates the direction of the island of Karpathos. In 1996 it was automated to facilitate navigation often difficult due to the strong winds especially in winter. Reaching it requires a walk along the sandy strip, then you have to continue on a dirt road for about two kilometers up to the promontory. Remember not to go in flip flops is not really comfortable and to bring you water and a hat because the path is under the beating sun. The view is truly enchanting and surprising especially at sunset, and will repay you for the effort.

The beach has a romantic magic ritual: all couples wishing to become parents must reach the hill and make little stone men, once concluded they will have to leave without ever looking back. Whether it works or not we don't know it is in fact that you will see many small works made with stones.

Near Prassonissi, we also find the settlement of Vroulia an important archaeological site inhabited from 650 to 550 BC considered military area as the last port of the Eastern Aegean Sea. In 1907 important excavations were carried out which gave birth to the famous black ceramics and mosaic floors of a 6th century paleochristian church still intact and visible to the present day.

Certainly the area of Prassonissi cannot be missing from the list of things to see in Rhodes, which offers not only a beautiful beach but also culture and unspoiled nature. Have fun then!
