Archangelos Village Rhodes

2 minutes to read

The Archangelos village, we find it in the eastern part of the Rhodes island about thirty kilometers from the capital in the middle between the famous Faliraki and Lindos areas .

Not yet very touristy, Archangelos retains that flavor of Ancient Greece with its whitewashed whitewashed houses, blue colored windows, narrow cobbled maze to get lost and where the population still keeps old traditions alive.

Small cafes where you can stop for a break, perhaps with a classic Greek coffee (attention is not like we drink and run away, the coffee break is a real ritual where you can take all the time you need to relax and maybe have a chat with some local), ceramic craft shops, traditional hand woven carpets and magnificent courtyards of yesteryear with colorful flowers that make the air different and typically Hellenic. Everything flows with its rhythms, and time seems to have stopped in Archangelos making the village an evocative atmosphere.

In the central part of the village there is the San Michele ArcangeloChurch, built in 1845 from the Baroque style with its white bell tower and a beautiful internal courtyard, the Saint John Church with its 14th and 16th century frescoes, and just outside the San Teodoro Church which preserves representations of 1372.

On the edge of the village, on top of a hill, we find the Archangelos Castle, a small fortress built over the ruins of a Byzantine castle by the Knights of St. John of the thirteenth century built to defend the inhabitants from pirates and Ottomans. It has an almost triangular shape as it follows the formation of the land, and on the left is the coat of arms of the Grand Master Orsini who in his period in Rhodes had the old Feraklos fortress  restored on the east coast, while on the right the coat of arms of the Grand Master Zacosta who in the period in which he reigned on the Hospitaller order, refused to deal with the Ottoman Empire for possession of the island.

At about three kilometers there are also other important things to visit such as the suggestive Tsambika Sanctuary which dominates the valley from above and offers amazing views especially at sunset, and from the top of the Koumelou hill an underground cave with stalactites where interesting finds have been found dating back to the Mycenaean and Neolithic periods, thus confirming the ancient origins of the area.

Interesting if by chance you were on the Rhodes island during the Carnival period, in Archangelos participate in the celebration that usually lasts for three days called "Mouzoma" where the inhabitants paint their faces black with ash and organize dances and parties with customs popular.

In the surroundings of Archangelos, you can also find beautiful beaches such as Stegna beach, a pretty inlet with a shallow bottom and Tsambika beach considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Rhodes.
