Saint Paul Bay Rhodes

2 minutes to read

Here is a stop to absolutely include in the list of things to see in Rhodes, the spectacular Saint Paul Bay.

We find it in the southeastern part of the island, near the wonderful Lindos village, the flagship of Rhodes. A breathtaking bay surrounded by rock formations that like a protective embrace cradle it from the Aegean Sea forming a sort of swimming pool inside the natural harbor where you can jump and splash around happily.

In reality there are two beaches, a larger one always very crowded, and a smaller one and certainly considerably quieter than the other because it can only accommodate a few people. But let's go in order and talk about the larger one that remains on the right side. A coastline of soft golden sand mixed with gravel, clear, transparent and warm waters, a sea with a turquoise and emerald color, a gently sloping seabed therefore perfect for families with children and for those who like to take long swims.

It is super equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, bars and typical taverns where to eat or something quick rather than sit comfortably and enjoy the dishes of the classic Greek and local tradition, all accompanied by music and lots of fun. Families choose the Saint Paul Bay for these reasons, excellent services and safety in the water where the little ones can play and tire until they drop while the adults can enjoy a well-deserved rest, perhaps with a colorful cocktail in hand.

The younger sister, also has a sandy beach mixed with gravel but is extremely quieter. There are some sun beds and umbrellas but no music or din, only the lazy sound of the sea.

In the shadow of the beautiful Acropolis of Lindos, this beach is considered to be one of the most beautiful in all of Rhodes. In the high season let's face it it becomes almost unlivable, everyone wants to spend at least a few hours, the whole landscape is very particular and unique and it is not difficult to understand why it is crowded.

A few minutes walk away, you will find the picturesque Lindos village, made up of low whitewashed houses, labyrinthine alleys, shops, restaurants, cafes and taverns. We find this village of enchanting beauty especially in the evening when the lights go on and everything seems fairy.

Surely the imposing Acropolis in its dominant position on the hill helps a lot to create this atmosphere, there are few places in Greece that have such wonders all in the same place. If you want to visit it, we advise you to do it early in the morning because this area of Rhodes is very hot, the temperatures are even a few degrees compared to other places and since everything is uphill it certainly does not help. It is a struggle to arrive believe it but once you get to the top you will congratulate yourself on the choice, because in addition to the important and interesting archaeological site, you can enjoy a view that will leave you breathless.

The Saint Paul Beach owes its name to Saint Paul, who according to the legend stopped in the bay due to a storm during his third trip while returning from Jerusalem in 58 AD where he began to evangelize the inhabitants of the island. A wonderful little church was then erected in honor of him directly overlooking the bay where both Greeks and foreigners love to celebrate weddings for the suggestive panorama.

Finally, it should be remembered that some scenes of the legendary film "The cannons of Navarone" were shot here with Antony Quinn who fell madly in love with Rhodes so much that he went back and bought the bay area dedicated to him but this is a 'other story ... If you really want to feel inside the film, look for the boats that will take you to Laki, the strait of the bay where the most beautiful scenes were shot.

How to get to the Bay of Saint Paul

It is very simple, wherever you have decided to stay, the direction is Lindos, follow the road signs and you will surely find it.

If you are not autonomous, you can opt either for a guided excursion proposed by the many tourist agencies scattered throughout the island, or with a public bus that runs from the major tourist resorts to Lindos. In this case, make sure you have updated timetables as they can change from period to period.

What else to add if not to visit this natural work of art and experience a day full of history and extraordinary places. Camera or mobile phone in hand, a click is a must!
