Marpissa Village Paros

2 minutes to read

The beautiful Marpissa village is located on the hill of Kefalos (the area is an extinct volcano) above Piso Livadi in the eastern part of Paros and is the oldest of the island.

It has an amphitheater shape with white cubic houses with blue windows dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, including colorful jasmine and bougainvillea, the aroma of basil that is not lacking in any Greek house, paved mazes that give the landscape that sense of surreal where time flows and is what it is.

In the town square, there are the characteristic three windmills of Paros, an icon in the Cicaldi islands and the path that leads to the monastery of Agios Antonios which dates back to the 17th century and was built on the outskirts of аntiсο саstеllо vеnеziаnο where, the view it is nothing short of spectacular with the Aegean Sea at its feet. Going up the steps from the square, one arrives at the church of Sotiros The Savior of Byzantine style, where the passion of Christ is depicted on Holy Friday with ancient Byzantine icons and the Via Crucis, still intact and faithful to the old traditions where young and old men unite together.

Of particular importance for the inhabitants of Marpissa is the Museum of Sculptures of Perantinos, a famous Greek sculptor who returned to the island in 1964 and founded the marble sculpture workshop.

Of course, typical taverns, cafes and traditional shops are not lacking, all accompanied by excellent cuisine and genuine hospitality of the people of the town.

According to mythology, Marpissa, the nymph daughter of the river Eveno, much loved by the gods, was so beautiful that the god Apollo fell madly in love with her, but Marpissa loved a mortal Idas. Zeus then asked Marpissa to choose between the immortal and the mortal and the nymph chose Idas responding to Zeus that the beauty of youth 'is lost and that the charm of life is beauty always beyond the time that man you love.
