Mikri Vigla Beach Naxos

2 minutes to read

The beautiful and fascinating Mikri Vigla beach, considered one of the most beautiful the Cyclades Islands, is located in the west part of the Naxos island just in front of the Paros island about eighteen kilometers from the capital Chora.

The splendid bay actually consists of two different but equally spectacular beaches separated by a hill with an extraordinary effect in a unique and amazing naturalistic context. In the past, the promontory was used by the inhabitants of the island as a vantage point for the sighting of pirates or usurpers intending to conquer Naxos who, with smoke signals during the day and bonfires at night, warned the population of the danger.

It is very popular and much loved by both tourists and locals for the opportunity to choose how to shape their day. Let's start with the northern part and Parthenos beach, a small bay with the small island of the same name with a beautiful landscape and definitely the best part to enjoy kitesurfing and show off your skills. It is the favorite beach for water sports enthusiasts as the Greek wind that comes from the north is always beaten by Meltemi. Here lovers of windsurfing and kitesurfing can really enjoy a world because the proximity of the island of Paros does not create long waves but acts as a corridor for the wind that channeling has a constant intensity ranging from 15/20 knots up to 30 on the most windy days. Mikri Vigla beach is internationally famous for windsurfing sportsmen who from all over the world gather in summer to enjoy the generosity of Aeolus the god of winds. Two very equipped centers are located on the beach and the most famous is the Club Mistral. We then move on to the stretch called Limanaki with a length of six hundred fifty meters and which has a coast of soft golden sand bathed by a turquoise blue sea with transparent and crystalline waters. Behind the Limanaki beach, a lake a few meters from the sea shore that was used in the past for the production of salt, one of the products mainly exported from the island of Naxos.

The southern part instead of Mikri Vigla beach is called Sahara and you will understand the reason for yourself, A real masterpiece of Mother Nature with a length of about a kilometer, a beach of fine white sand, a sea limpid and crystalline with aquamarine blue tones and gently sloping sandy bottoms, ideal for families with children and for long swims. Protected from the winds due to its shape, it is a sort of corner of paradise and will give you unforgettable days. It is equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas and numerous taverns offering local specialties based on fresh products with an excellent quality / price ratio and some also with a magnificent sea view. Despite its size, however, the offer for a day on the beach is not so generous, therefore those who arrive first are better staying or the alternative is to bring your own umbrella.

If instead you love snorkeling or you are passionate about underwater sports, in the northern part of Mikri Vigla beach, around the rocks, you will be amazed by the underwater scenery that will present itself to your eyes. A multitude of species ranging from octopus, mullet to grouper and sometimes it is also possible to spot moray eels and turtles. A real natural aquarium!

How to get to Mikri Vigla

If you have your own vehicle, just follow the asphalt road with the signs for Mikri Vigla. You pass the Glinado village and Vivlos and you have arrived. If, on the other hand, you are not independent, buses depart every day from the port of the capital Chora (check timetables) which go directly to the beach.
