Naxos Beaches

2 minutes to read

Naxos is considered a bit like the Caribbean of Greece for its beautiful beaches of fine sand, crystal clear sea and shallow waters. It is an island suitable for families with children but beware of going away because, due to its position, the Greek wind par excellence is subject to Meltemi. The northern part is certainly the beaten one in fact it is a paradise for lovers of sailing sports and surfers.

Here are the beaches not to be missed if you decide to come to the island of Naxos:

Plaka Beach

Plaka Beach of Naxos is located in the western part of the island about half of the island and is considered as an extension of that of Agia Anna beach. Considered one of the best beaches of Naxos, it has a very long coastline of light soft sand with in some points large flat stones and a transparent and clear sea. It is equipped only in the initial part with sunbeds and umbrellas, while the rest of the beach is completely free and extremely natural. Behind the dunes that frame Plaka Beach, a choice of bars, typical taverns and restaurants. Reaching it is very simple, either by bus leaving from Chora or via the paved road that comes from Agia Anna. Ideal for families with children.

Agios Prokopios Beach

In the western part of the Naxos island, about five kilometers from Naxos Town, is Agios Prokopios beach, the most famous beach on the island. Considered one of the most 'of Greece, for years it has been awarded the Blue Flag, thanks to its transparent, very clean and turquoise and emerald green waters. The coastline of fine and clear sand is surrounded by sand dunes that make the place idyllic. The beach is equipped for part with sunbeds and umbrellas and water sports, while another part is still totally wild and natural. Behind the beach the picturesque village with its typical taverns, restaurants, cafes and shops. Agios Prokopios is the ideal destination for families with children as it is very protected from the winds. Getting there is very simple, either with your own vehicle following the directions or with buses that leave regularly from the capital or from the Chora every day in the summer.

Agios Georgios Beach

The beautiful Agios Georgios Bay, is considered a bit the closest beach to the capital. It is located at the Chora in the northwest part of the of Naxos island. One of the longest of all the Cyclades islands is soft golden sand with a clear and clean sea. The generally shallow and sandy bottom is ideal for families with children. All along the coast, you will be amazed by how long it has calm waters that become more agitated towards the end. The final part of Agios Georgios is in fact the home of surfers and lovers of water sports where there are several clubs that rent equipment. Well equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, typical taverns where you can enjoy some local dishes or traditional Greek cuisine, it is certainly one of the most crowded beaches on the island, but given the size it will not be difficult to find a little more quiet. From Agios Georgios we see  Paros island, opposite Naxos island.

Orkos Beach

Orkos Beach is located in the western part of  Naxos island and is considered the continuation of Plaka Beach. The scenery to which you will encounter is unique, gentle hills of red and barren earth that mix with a coastline of soft golden sand and an intense turquoise sea. And yes, Mother Nature has done a great job here! It is a succession of coves and inlets that fit together between cedar trees. The beach is not equipped so if you decide to spend the day here, arm yourself with everything you need. On the left you can see the Mikri Vigla village with its purely Cycladic style houses that give that postcard-like touch. However, the location does not protect the Greek wind very much from Meltemi and for this reason, Orkos Beach is one of the favorite beaches for sports lovers like windsurfing and kitesurfing. Being a remote area, however it remains very quiet and therefore much loved by those who do not want to fuss around and for lovers of wild nature. Getting there is very simple, or by your own vehicle following the signs for Mikri Vigla, or by bus leaving from the capital.

Mikri Vigla Beach

It is located on the west side of the Naxos island at about eighteen kilometers from the capital and reaching it is very easy by the paved road. Actually Mikri Vigla is formed by two beaches divided by a scenic promontory. The northern part has a coastline of soft gold-colored sand and a transparent sea with turquoise waters. It is often beaten by Meltemi, in fact it is the preferred destination for lovers of windsurfing and kitesurfing. The southern part, also called Sahara, is a long coastline of very fine clear sand with a crazy sea that goes from turquoise to blue. Behind many taverns with local specialties. The southern part is much loved by families with children as it is not windswept.

Kastraki Beach

Kastraki Beach is also located on the west side of the island and is just past Sahara Beach. It is a beach of fine clear sand bathed by a clear and transparent sea, and formed by different bays different from one another with a rock that appears as if by magic from the sea. Around green trees that make shadows in the hot summer hours. A still uncontaminated and uncrowded scenario. Some typical taverns if you are hungry or for a drink. The beach is not equipped so remember to bring everything you need. Given the location, there is always a slight wind that should not deter you from going for a ride because it really deserves. Reaching it is very simple, via the paved road from any direction and for the last kilometer by a dirt road but in good condition and passable both by car and motorbike.

Pyrgaki Beach

Pyrgaki beach is located in the southwest part of the Naxos island and can be reached by following the paved road that starts from Alyko. The surrounding scenery made of verdant forest areas makes the area ideal for families with children. The beach is a small strip of fine white sand with dunes and a sea with shallow, clear waters and a turquoise color. It is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas and a nearby restaurant is ideal for a lunch, a coffee or a quick snack. Given the location, it can be subject to the winds because it is one of the favorite destinations for windsurfing, but when the wind does not blow it becomes a real paradise.

Aliko Beach

Aliko beach is located in the southwest part of Naxos near the Kastraki and Glyfada beaches. Reaching it is very simple or with a private vehicle through the paved road following the indications or by bus from the Naxos port with six daily trips. The beach has a long and wide shoreline with fine white sand, sand dunes and cedar and tamaric trees to find some shade in the hottest hours since it is not equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas. However, there are typical taverns and a few bars nearby for eating or drinking. The sea needless to say, crystalline and turquoise. It is a very quiet beach as it has several small coves where you can also stay in complete solitude. On one side of the promontory, a cedar forest that is part of the protected natural area that makes the landscape almost exotic.

Agiassos Beach

One of the southernmost beaches on the west side of the  Naxos island is Agiassos Beach. It is located about twenty kilometers south of Chora and to get there you have to go for a piece of dirt road, but the beach and the landscape will reward you for the journey. Still uncontaminated it is of soft sand color or with shallow waters, clear sea and turquoise ideal for families with children. In the background, green hills that mix with the blue of the sea make the landscape very special, infusing peace and relaxation. The beach is not equipped so bring everything you need if you decide to stop in this little corner not yet besieged by mass tourism. Near the coast, however, a small tavern where you can enjoy excellent and simple typical cuisine and nevertheless admire breathtaking views.

Sahara Beach

Considered as the extension of Mirki Vigla Beach on the west side of the island, just behind it, is Sahara Beach. It is a very long beach of fine pale sand bathed by waters that descend slowly, transparent and turquoise. On the right side, right next to the promontory, it is certainly the ideal area to spend a beautiful day at the beach as it is more protected from the winds. This beach is a great alternative for kite-surfing enthusiasts who want to be away from the crowd. Behind the beach, a restaurant for a drink or a quick lunch. Ideal for families with children and for snorkelers.

Panermos Beach

Located in the south east of the  Naxos island, we find Panermos Beach. It is about 54 kilometers from Naxos city which is perhaps why it is still excluded from mass tourism. It is a small bay with a coastline of soft sand, not even clear and limpid water and some palm trees to have some shade in the hot summer hours. It is partly equipped and given the size, the one who arrives first is the best. Behind the beach there is a nice little café for something to eat or drink. Also behind Panermos Beach another small beach just behind the ancient acropolis.

Agia Anna Beach

Agia Anna is located about seven kilometers from the capital Naxos Town and is also considered as other beaches on the island the extension of another and precisely of Agios Prokopios beach. Reaching it is child's play, following the main road follow the signs. It is a coastline of golden sand with a crystal clear turquoise sea. The various beaches are divided by some rock formation and a small fishing port. The village behind it offers restaurants, typical taverns, bars and night clubs. The beach is equipped with sun beds and umbrellas and is very popular with families with children.
