The Windmills Mykonos

2 minutes to read

The windmills of the Mykonos island also called Kato Myli are located in the  Kastro area on the top of a gentle hill in the west part close to the sea and above the picturesque Little Venice multifaceted neighborhood with brightly colored houses overlooking the water which is very reminiscent of our Venice (hence Little Venice).

Considered one of the main attractions and true trademark of the Mykonos island, I can find several in the area but the most famous are those of Alefkandra.

Dating back to the 16th century for over 400 years, they were the largest economic source on the island. Once upon a time Mykonos was a great producer of wheat so as to be able to satisfy beyond the present population, even external requests by exporting flour outside Greece. The grinding of cereals and olives coming even from other neighboring islands, were a very important source of income for the life of the locals and made it prosperous and rich for a long time. Since tourism has become the primary source of income, the mills have been discharged but fortunately preserved and redeveloped as a panoramic point and one of the must sees in Mykonos.

In purely Greek style, with conical thatched roofs with thick whitewashed walls and large wooden blades fed by the strong winds that often and willingly blow over Mykonos, to date only sixteen original mills remain. Visiting their interior is impossible as they are closed to the public except one called "Bonis" transformed into a curious museum with photos described in Greek and English that tell the important story of these ingenious buildings.

The  Mykonos Mills outline the horizon and are an unmissable stop to enjoy the wonderful panorama visible from this hill that ranges from Little Venice to the blue waters of the Aegean Sea, to be captured in a suggestive souvenir photo. The moment of sunset is definitely the moment not to be missed, where everything is tinged with color and the white of the mills changes from red to all its shades making you feel like inside a postcard. In the evening, illuminated by a magical play of light, the darkness of the night watches over the Mykonos city as guardians. The choice is difficult if you admire this spectacle of Nature from here rather than comfortably sitting in one of the many clubs in Little Venice, perhaps with an exotic drink in your hand, the choice is yours, we recommend doing it from both perspectives.

How to reach the Mykonos Windmills

It is very simple, with a car, a scooter or even on foot from the city if you like to walk, through the Mykonos Town streets  climbing the stairs or following the slightly sloping road to the promontory. Once you reach the top, there is a convenient parking lot which is always very crowded during the high season, but you know who gets better first.

Also in this case it is right to put a note on the things to do in Mykonos about the Mills, the view is amazing and will leave you with a pleasant memory every time you close your eyes and think about your holiday in Mykonos.
