Church Panagia Paraportiani Mykonos

2 minutes to read

The Panagia Paraportiani church, (Panagia means Virgin Mary) is the most famous Orthodox church on the Mykonos island and is located in the Kastro district right on the sea not far from Little Venice in the capital.

Considered one of the most important sacred buildings in Mykonos, the Panagia Paraportiani Church is actually the set of five churches Agios Sozontas, Agioi Anargyroi the oldest, Agia Anastasia and Agios Efstathios the center of the chapel, built starting from 1475 until the 17th century. The Panagia Paraportiani Church was born from the fusion of the other four churches thus becoming the basis of the current one which was also embellished by a dome. The location of the Church is exactly in one of the gates of the ancient medieval walls that surrounded the Mykonos city and the ancient fort in the past, and here is revealed the reason for the name Paraportiani (internal or secondary door).

Among the six hundred churches scattered on the territory of the Mykonos island, Panagia Paraportiani in its classic structure typical of the Cyclades Island and whitewashed with lime, is truly impressive because the immaculate white of the walls with the blue of the sky and the sea make this extremely magical place.

Even more at sunset time this almost fairy place is even more suggestive, when the sky is tinged with a thousand colors and is reflected on the pure white of the Church creating light effects difficult to explain, you can understand only when you will see with the your eyes what I want to convey to you.

Obviously, given the beauty of the Church, which unfortunately is not possible to visit inside because it is closed to the public, and considering the position, Panagia Paraportiani has always been a magnet for photography lovers where you can, even if you are not professional, make wonderful shots that will remain forever in the baggage of your memories during your holiday in Greece in Mykonos.

Just to not miss anything, the nearby Windmills also one of the major attractions of the Mykonos island are the setting for this beautiful and ancient masterpiece of architecture that seems to change its shape based on where you will look at it.

How to reach the Panagia Paraportiani Church

Being in Mykonos Town, you can reach it with a walk from the center.

Also this wonder is to be included in the things to do in Mykonos, perhaps combining it with a visit to the Windmills and ending the day in Little Venice with an aperitif, dinner and after dinner perhaps comfortably seated in one of the romantic clubs on the edge of the water .
