Agios Ioannis Beach Milos

2 minutes to read

The remote Agios Ioannis Beach, we find it in the southwest part of the beautiful Milos Island in the area of Xilokeratia and about twenty three kilometers from Adamas.

Set in a wonderful bay that takes its name from the beach, it is actually made up of three coves one after the other that have soft sand with a dark color due to its volcanic origin, transparent and crystalline waters with a sea of incredible emerald color. All around high cliffs of white rocks that stand out on the sea and leave space for this little corner of paradise while the surrounding hills are covered with a Mediterranean scrub made of low shrubs, a real painting painted by Mother Nature.

It should be emphasized that of the three inlets, the first the largest can be reached by land with some difficulty, while the other two obviously even more beautiful where the cliffs sculpted by atmospheric events frame, can be reached or swimming for about ten minutes or always through a path but you have to be an expert as it is necessary to climb narrow passages so if you are not equipped and above all used to it it becomes quite dangerous.

The Agios Ioannis beach, given its position like all the beaches of this part of the Milos Island, is completely unspoiled, everything is as it was in its origins, there is no trace of man here and also its difficult to reach the it protects from mass tourism and the consequent destructive exploitation.

Clearly there are no traces of comfort, not even the shade, just like natural shade, there are no trees where to shelter during the hottest hours, so if you decide to spend the whole day there, remember to bring you a drink, something to eat and something to protect yourself. from the sun.

Agios Ioannis beach is one of the most beautiful spots to watch the sunset in Milos. You want for the position, you want for the magnificent natural scenery that surrounds it, it is perfect for seeing the sunset that creates plays of light with warm colors and where to take the perfect photo.

During your visit, do not miss the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Siderianos which is located right on the hill above the bay. To date, only a few monks live in this almost deserted part of Milos Island. A beautiful story revolves around the convent that speaks of a miracle. In the medieval period the inhabitants closed themselves inside to defend themselves from an attack by pirates, they prayed with all their faith to St. John who listened to their cry for help by transforming the wooden door into iron (hence sideranios which in Greek means ferro) saving them from certain death. It is also said that a raider trying to break through the door with his fists was paralyzed. In September a feast is celebrated in honor of St. John and many locals and also people from other islands devoted to the saint, gather for a big party with local music. Do not miss to go there if during your holiday in Milos in the period you will be on the island, you will participate in a very isolated and typically Greek experience.

How to get to Agios Ioannis Beach

It is necessary to have your own rental vehicle, preferably a 4x4 given the road conditions. A first option is following towards Embourios. Just before the village the road splits you, you have to follow the signs indicating the direction to Agios Ioannis beach.

The second is the coastal road and you have to pass Provatas and then continue always paying attention to the road signs. We remind you that in both cases most of the route is dirt with gravel, which is why it is better to have a suitable vehicle.

Or by sea, or with a rented boat or look for some organized trips among the island's agencies.

A beach to be included among the things to do in Milos, for the impressive naturalistic aspect and especially if you want a quiet place and where to spend a beautiful day relaxing.
