Kimolos

2 minutes to read

The small Kimolos island, is located north of the Milos island and is a real gem. It is a destination not yet taken by storm by mass tourism or at least not the daily one, given that to reach it from the port of Pollonia in Milos, the famous Pantofola leaves every day a particular type of boat where you can also embark the car and moped, and which ferries visitors for a trip out of town.

Besides being still authentic and deeply linked to the old traditions, Kimolos has fabulous beaches where the water is particularly crystal clear and taking a bath is a real privilege. The relaxed atmosphere where nature has put its own is the thing you can most appreciate in this small island.

All activities are concentrated in Chorio, the only village on the island that is located around the port and it is in this area that the most equipped beaches are located. You can still visit the others either by taking a nice walk or by boat with the tours organized directly in Kimolos or with your vehicle if you brought it from Milos.

Chorio village, the capital of Kimolos, fully reflects the classic architectural style of the Cyclades islands with white houses with blue windows, domes with many colors, windmills and enchanted mazes that are lost between the houses. In the heart of Chorio the oldest part instead houses the hard local stone castle built by Marco Sanudo in the 16th century with a church called Cristo Pantokrate with a collection of icons inside. But let's say that the most suggestive part is definitely the courtyard that offers a breathtaking view. Wandering around Chorio you cannot help but notice that some houses have tiny windows almost like loopholes and their purpose was precisely to defend the population from attacks by pirates and invaders.

Also on the Kimolos island there are the ancient Syrmata buildings with colored doors carved in the rocks that were used by fishermen as a storage for boats during the winter to protect them from winds and weather events. The most beautiful ones are in Guopa.

The north west part of the island is certainly the one most whipped by the wind and is witnessed by the Skiadi, a true work of art of nature shaped like a mushroom by the sea and winds. On the contrary, the north east part is very quiet and sheltered from Eolo. Here you can relax on the Agios Georgios beach an expanse of clear sand and a sea with very clean and transparent water. To the south, on the other hand, we find Aliki beach where the seabed of sand and small pebbles is ideal for a swim or for snorkelers. Bonastsa is located in the southern part of Kimolos and offers a coast of gold colored sand and needless to say crystal clear water. You can reach it if you want to walk or boat. In the surroundings a couple of typical taverns where you can taste the local specialties. However the most popular and popular is Psathi beach a few steps from the port and therefore convenient for those who do not want to take a walk. Here the beach is a bit crowded in the summer but on the other hand it has the best fish taverns on the island.

Do not miss the opportunity to visit it if you are for your holidays in Greece on the Milos island, it would be a shame.
