Getting around Lefkada
Lefkada Island extends for about 335 square kilometers and is 35 long. Not really small but not very big either, so with a good itinerary prepared in advance, you can see at least the most important things.
Known for its white sand beaches lapped by turquoise waters that look almost fake, it is actually an island filled with mountains, cliffs and tree-covered hills. It is rich in animal and plant species such as rare lilies, wild flowers, blue ivy as well as beautiful eucalyptus and poplar plants, expanses of olive and citrus trees. The lagoon between the island and the mainland is right on one of the most important migratory routes where rare bird species come to winter and reproduce.
If you love discovery, go towards Nydri to the waterfalls of the Dimossari Gorge, you can walk along a beautiful path of about six hundred meters between ancient plane trees that shelter you from the heat, small wooden bridges and steps up to the waterfalls and a small lake. A very special ride as an alternative to a day at the beach.
Having said this, our advice for getting around Lefkada in view of its morphology is undoubtedly the car. You can bring yours directly from Italy or you can rent it upon your arrival. Given the distance between the airport and the island, it would be better and more convenient if you had it delivered and redelivered directly at the airport so as to save transfers and be completely independent and free to do what you like most, and also remember that often especially during the summer period when the island is particularly crowded on the state road you cannot run, on the contrary you will be forced to maintain an average speed of less than 70 km per hour so do your math.
Another reason for choosing the car is the fact that the most beautiful and absolutely must-see beaches are always at the end of steep descents preceded by hairpin bends...
If, on the other hand, you are a two-wheeled lover, nobody prevents you from doing so, but take a cylinder capacity of at least 150 cc and be careful of the wind. What is certain is that with a scooter there are few parking problems and you can get to points where the car cannot, but the choice is always up to you. Be aware and responsible!
For those who don't want to know about driving, there is the possibility of getting around the island by public transport. Attention, this is easy and feasible only if for your holiday in Lefkada you have chosen to stay in Lefkas Town or the surrounding area as all the buses that reach most of the towns leave from here. An accurate and careful check of the timetables and destination is always the first thing to do.
