Diafani Village Karpathos

The delightful Diafani village is located in the north east of the Karpathos island about 50 kilometers from the capital Pigadia.

The second port of the island and a fundamental point to connect the north and the south, it remains very isolated as for the village of Olympos, making it extremely quiet and perfect for those looking for a holiday in Greece in total relaxation.

A village with a classic Greek flavor, with its white and blue houses adorned with colorful bougainvillea connected by small alleys, a classic Orthodox church with a pomegranate-colored dome, all close to a beautiful bay like a typical postcard of the sea.

Here life flows slowly without frenzy, everything happens because it has to happen and the only thought is to enjoy these moments of almost surreal peace of mind for body and mind. If you want an eventful holiday we certainly don't recommend staying in Diafani, the small village is exactly the opposite. Here at the most you can in the evening take a walk in the square behind the beach where two benches and I stress two are facing the sea, sit listening to the silence, or go to eat in one of the taverns where you can taste specialties of ancient and local recipes, maybe making friends with some locals.

Archaeological sites or monuments worthy of note are not found in the Diafani village so small and collected, but it must be said that the most beautiful trekking walks in all of Karpathos start from here. There are numerous routes to be taken and the choice will satisfy everyone, offering idyllic landscapes and views that can only be reached on foot.

In the vicinity of Diafani, we find Saria island, another stop to put on the list of things to see in Karpathos. Uninhabited, wild and uncontaminated where rock peaks, Mediterranean scrub with a thousand species and fantastic beaches like Alimounda and Palatia bathed by a turquoise and crystalline sea frame a small corner of Eden. The island of Saria can only be reached by boat and excursions are organized by both Diafani and Pigadia.

If you are discovering the north of Karpathos, it is also worth taking a trip to the now abandoned Tristomo village where the owners of the remaining houses usually go there at the weekend for the weekend and if you are lucky you can find someone with the classic friendliness Greek will invite you to her table sharing food with you.

The beach marks the boundary between the sea and the island, it is the last stretch of land. Very small, we are talking about four hundred meters, narrow with a coast of flat pebbles and a clear, clean and almost never crowded sea. Certainly not the most beautiful, but comfortable if you are staying in Diafani and perfect after a visit to the Olympos village. At times there are some sun beds and umbrellas and behind them, some cafeteria or tavern to drink or eat something. It is very popular with locals who like to cool off especially in the afternoon in the regenerating waters.

After passing the village in the northern part, the beach becomes even more wild and secluded thanks to a cliff. In the vicinity of Diafani about two and a half kilometers to the north, we find Vananda beach. The coast is made of stones so you should wear shoes if you have delicate feet while the sea that caresses it is limpid and with crazy colors. The beach is not equipped there is nothing, so 'remember to bring everything you need. Behind there are some tamarisk trees for some deserved natural shade during the hottest hours and a source of drinking water. Vananda beach can be reached either with a vehicle through an easy dirt road or with a nice walk from Diafani in about half an hour.

We reiterate the concept that the Diafani village remains quite isolated in Karpathos just to give you an idea we are about 50 kilometers from Pigadia and 70 from the airport. Better to have your own vehicle also to be able to move independently from one place to another.

An alternative is to reach Diafani by sea, for example with a daily excursion from Pigadia that also touches other places such as the island of Saria and some beautiful beaches, however, giving little space and time to the village, or with the passenger ship arriving from Rhodes with direction to Crete (the ship is called Prevelis).

Another way to get there is via the local buses. Keep in mind, however, that in Karpathos they are not very organized from this point of view, the buses are not there every day so check the timetables beforehand.

Here is still a village to see in Karpathos maybe combining it with the beautiful village of Olympos or why not for a healthy and enchanting walk to discover the north of the island, a magnificent area still so wild and intact.
