Saria Island Karpathos

2 minutes to read

The beautiful and still unspoiled (and let's hopefully add forever) Saria island, is located in the northern part of Karpathos. A still wild nature with rocky peaks, Mediterranean scrub, olive and almond trees, helichrysum and rock rose and not least splendid beaches such as Alimounda and Palatia bathed by a blue and crystalline sea, what more can you ask for then.

Very close to Karpathos, in an hour or two (depending on where you start with the boat) you will arrive on this paradise formed due to a violent earthquake that destroyed the bridge that once connected them thus causing isolation between a and the other. It is said that the name Saria derives from the surname of a Greek princess named Caterina descended from the royal family of Saria and, in honor of her indescribable beauty, the island was dedicated to her.

Its surface is about twenty square kilometers and today it is uninhabited but, in the past, it attracted Saracen pirates to its coasts who lived in small stone houses of which the remains are still found, and some shepherds who lived in the stable plant in the hinterland in the now abandoned ghost village of Argos.

The Saria island has become the home of goats who will welcome you to the beach as perfect hosts and from other animal species such as the monk seal (there is a community of about 40 specimens), the peregrine falcon and many other varieties of feathers as in the trajectory of one of the main migratory routes.

The beaches needless to say, barren of stones and stones but with a sea to scream where swimming lovers and snorkeling can have fun until exhaustion.

For walkers, however, a not particularly difficult path will take you inland through gorges with red marks on the stones to indicate the way, until you reach the Argos village. Dating from the Middle Ages, it is located on a small plateau surrounded by stones and a few trees. About thirty stone houses are present and well preserved, as we said before, uninhabited apart sporadically by some shepherd or beekeeper from the Diafani village, one of the closest ports. Continuing along the path among fragrant thyme bushes that turn pink in bloom, over a gentle slope, the white  Agios Zacharias church where the panorama will leave you breathless. Rebuilt above the ruins of a church dating back to the 1800s on the panoramic terrace, it has a well where you can cool off and admire the spectacular landscape around you.

Going down the path towards the Palatia beach , between cliff walls, you will find caves where you can take a regenerating bath in a water with blue reflections and extremely clean.

A recommendation, if you plan to venture into the path inside the Saria island, remember to have comfortable shoes, no flip flops, water and a hat because most of the journey is under the beating sun.

The possibilities to make this interesting excursion are many both from Pigadia and from Diafani, you see where you are more comfortable. Since Pigadia, being further away, the time spent on the Saria island will be approximately one hour less than the departures from Diafani.
