Vlychada Beach Kalymnos

2 minutes to read

The Vlychada Beach, we find it in the extreme south of the Kalymnos Island on the west side, about five kilometers from the capital Pothia.

A small cove that offers two coasts, one of sand and one of small stones, with clean and very transparent waters in common, a sea that passes from the blue to the sparkling blue typical of the majestic Aegean Sea (the blue of this sea is something fantastic, it is not found anywhere in the world), a backdrop that descends quite quickly so 'if you have small children have an extra eye,

For one part it is equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas for about eight euros a day, while an area with pebbles is mostly completely free so you can find your place and spread out your towel. Tamarisk trees surround it, a real blessing during the hottest hours to shelter from the sun. As for the restaurant, there is no problem, the small village of the same name and also directly on the beach, you will find some excellent taverns where you can let yourself be carried away by the flavors of classic Greek and local cuisine.

As we have already pointed out, in our opinion the Kalymnos Island is one of the islands of the Dodecanese Archipelago where you eat better perhaps because fishing is one of the main livelihoods of the inhabitants, you always manage to have very fresh fish and also because Kalymni really likes to treat themselves well from a culinary point of view, know that especially on weekends, most families go out to eat and on Saturdays and Sundays, already in the morning you will find many people around even in winter who find themselves in the cafes to have a chat and pull the time to put the legs under the table until late afternoon.

For sea lovers, a very nice and interesting private museum of maritime finds where you can admire historical relics and better understand seafaring life. In the country, you can also find some rooms for rent in case you decide for your holiday in Kalymnos to stay in this part of the island.

If you move in a bit southwest to Vothinous, you can explore the impressive cave of Kefalas also called the cave of God with an area of about one thousand square meters with six internal chambers. A long corridor of more than one hundred meters adorned with ancient stalactites and stalagmites. Its name is due to the fact that traces related to the cult of Zueus can be found. It can be reached either by sea with a boat or by land following the provincial road from Pothia, but be careful that at a certain point it becomes a dirt road. Arrived at the top of the hill where the road ends and after passing the Monastery of Santa Caterina, follow the signs marked on the rocks and you will arrive in one of the natural masterpieces of Mother Nature.

Another cave, always near Pothia and not far from Vlychada beach, is the cave of the Seven Virgins also called the Cave of the Water Lilies just below the Flaska mountain. Never fully explored and still in its remote state, it has a legend that tells of seven girls who found shelter and hid right here 'to escape the pirates who sailed the seas in search of raids and young women who, however,' could no longer ' to go out and remained until the end of their days trapped in the cavity.

How to get to Vlychada Beach

Very simple, head south west keeping Pothia as a reference point and follow the road signs.

Kalymnos is a unique and particular island, to be discovered with very beautiful and unusual coasts compared to the other islands of the archipelago and the Vlychada beach is one of them, so 'insert it among the things to see in Kalymnos, perhaps even combining one visit to the fabulous caves.

We thank our friend Chicca who this year decided to dedicate her holidays in Greece to Kalymnos and was an excellent island-inspector!
