Gefyra Beach Kalymnos

2 minutes to read

Gefyra beach, we find it in the extreme southern part of the Kalymnos island on the west side about a kilometer and a half from the lively capital Pothia.

A small cove with a coastline of small clear pebbles, crystalline and spotless waters despite its proximity to the port, a sea that changes from blue to aquamarine, seabed that drops quite quickly a few meters from the shore. For something to eat or drink there is a family-run canteen where you can find something fresh to quench your thirst and something quick to quench your hunger, if you want a finished lunch instead, just move to Pothia and there you will only have the spoiled for choice on where to put the legs under the table to savor excellent fresh fish or local recipes and classic Greek cuisine.

Gefyra beach is equipped with a few sunbeds and umbrellas, not much stuff given its small size with a few trees behind it that give coolness especially during the hottest hours of the day in case you weren't early enough to grab the numbered parasols.

It is very popular with locals as it is very close to the capital, making it an excellent alternative for a refreshing bath perhaps during the lunch break or after work.

Surrounded by rock faces, Gefyra beach is very popular with snorkelers who will have a lot of fun discovering the marine flora and fauna of Kalymnos. Even sportsmen who prefer diving are particularly numerous in this part of the island because the very deep seabed has many things to offer, so much so that just after Gefyra beach beyond Therma beach, there is the main diving center.

You must know that the Kalymnos islandi  is famous for its sponge fishermen who once used to collect them when there were no cylinders and all the equipment that we can have available today, to dive they tied a rope around their waist to which a heavy boulder was hung to be able to remain anchored to the bottom in the collection of these animals. The Kalimni so called the inhabitants of Kalymnos have a long tradition of hundreds of years behind them as sailors specialized above all in diving. Among other things, the island lends itself very well to this sport, in fact every year many people from all over the world come to explore the depths of the Aegean. But the island of Kalymnos is also known by those who practice climbing. Its particular conformation made of high rocky mountains, caves and precipices, attracts thousands of sportsmen to conquer the peaks or participate in the free climbing world championship which is usually held in the month of October. In short, if you want to keep fit and participate in this type of activity, you are in the right place.

How to reach Gefyra Beach

As always if you have a rental vehicle, whether it's a scooter or a car, keeping Pothia as a reference point, heading west and not even after a kilometer you will find the beach just below the road.

If you are staying directly in the capital, you can also go for a nice walk.

A small beach, convenient if you don't feel like exploring the island and it is worth keeping as a "moment of leisure" among the things to see in Kalymnos.
