Emporios Beach Kalymnos

We arrive at Emporios beach or also called Emborios beach in the northernmost part on the west side of Kalymnos Island. Pothia the capital is about twenty kilometers away, while Massouri and Myrties are pleasant seaside resorts about twelve.

The area of Emporios which in Greek means "trade" in ancient times was a very commercial place and hence its name. Emborios beach together with its picturesque village are the last inhabited center of Kalymnos Island, from here on only still unspoiled nature and nothing else.

Set in a beautiful natural bay, Emporios beach has a coastline of small pebbles smoothed by atmospheric events and the sea, transparent and very clean waters that pass from blue to turquoise and a seabed that descends fairly quickly. On both sides of the shoreline there are some rock formations perfect for snorkelers who can have fun exploring the underwater world. Around the beach there are tamarisk trees that give providential shade during the hottest hours to those who decide for a day in complete freedom and spread their towel in the free area.

It is equipped with a few sun beds and umbrellas while as regards the restaurant, behind you you will have the choice between some typical taverns where you can taste the delicious dishes of local cuisine and Greek tradition, or opt for something lighter in one of the cafes or in some bar.

The Emporios village, has about seventy permanent inhabitants who are mainly dedicated to farming and fishing even if, in recent years tourism is starting to take hold, in fact you will be able to find accommodation options such as rooms for rent rather than some apartments to rent. A quiet village with white cubic houses, narrow alleys that intersect almost like a labyrinth (again due to the pirate attacks in the past) where you can take a pleasant walk and admire the simplicity of these places sometimes dotted with colorful flowers. In the center, the classic Orthodox church with its blue dome and the imposing bell tower overlooking the Aegean. Here in Emborios, there are taverns where you can eat very well at more than fair prices. For a moment of pause you can go and visit the archaeological sites such as the old fort of the Hellenistic period still in good condition and called Kastri di San Giorgio which in ancient times with its mighty walls, a massive door and two high towers protected the whole area. Inside, still preserved, you can see the base of an old oil mill.

Right in front of the beach and the village of Emporios, you can admire the mystical Telendos island which, observed from this angle, seems to have a completely different shape if seen as a type of Myrties where it looks like a large snail. The first time we visited Telendos we walked among the olive trees until we reached a small rocky beach where the sea was really angry but with a charm all its own. Under a tamarisk we saw a boy who looked almost like an ancient Greek God who played the lyre and sang with his gaze turned towards the Aegean. It was a mystical moment, we did not understand what it was saying, but the music and the melody were almost hypnotic enough to make us be enchanted with the awareness at the end of having had the good fortune to witness a scene that is not very moving and of great tradition.

Head south west from any place you decide to stay, following the main road and signs.
