Telendos Kalymnos

2 minutes to read

Telendos islet is located in the north western part just opposite the Kalymnos island . They are separated by a seven hundred meters long canal which, in ten minutes by boat, can be crossed starting from the pretty Myrties village.

Once Telendos and Kalymnos were all one until a powerful earthquake of 535 AD divided them giving life to this small pearl in the middle of the sea.

It has an area of five square kilometers and is permanently inhabited by about fifty people. It has only one village with a marina, a few taverns where you can taste excellent fresh fish while contemplating the sea, a few cafes, some but very few accommodations for tourists and what we think is fantastic, it has no roads so no cars or mopeds, yes can explore only and exclusively on foot. This makes Telendos still an intact, uncontaminated and natural island, where stress and frenzy don't even know what it means.

It is a barren island, not fertile, where it almost never rains, only rocks with a large mountain called Rakis 458 meters high loved by climbing sportsmen, some beaches such as Hoklakas which is located on the opposite side from the sandy port and small dark pebbles with a few umbrellas and deck chairs, (from this position the sunset is magical), or the Paradise Beach in the north east part much loved by naturist, and still extremely wild Pnimenos with a crystal clear sea in the south west part from the port , and last but not least, Mary's Beach of sand and pebbles on the north east side with trees that give shade and a transparent sea. The Telendos inhabitants deal almost exclusively with fishing also because cultivating something is practically impossible.

Despite being small in size, Telendos offers archaeological ruins dating back to the fifth and sixth centuries AD. A testimony of this is the early Christian Basilic of Agios Vassilios, the remains of a Byzantine fort and the walls of the Church of Agios Costantinos which suggest how much Telendos was once a rich and noble society.

How to reach the Telendos Island

Is really child's play, every day several times a day (in the summer about every half hour), there are boats from Myrties that go back.

Make it a day on the small Telendos island, you will seem to be catapulted into another dimension where everything has always been like this, almost nothing has changed and where the relaxation and magnificence of Nature are still the main things to be preserved.
