Plakoto Beach Ios

2 minutes to read

The remote and unspoiled PlakotoBeach can be found in the north-eastern part of the Ios Island about thirteen kilometers from the capital Chora.

A primitive beach where Mother Nature is still perfectly intact as on the day of her creation, here it is almost impossible that human beings can get there to deface and change the landscape and certainly for this reason it is one of the few places still virgin on the island that we hope it will remain so for other millennia.

A small but beautiful bay with a coastline of fine sand, clean and crystalline waters, an intense blue sea with a backdrop that has stones so be very careful if you decide to go and visit it and take a bath. It goes without saying that it is not equipped, nothing reigns supreme so if during your holiday in Ios the idea of venturing up to here occurred to you, remember to bring everything you need to drink, eat and shelter from the sun as it is not even there. a tree, only low shrubs of Mediterranean scrub.

Its open position makes it very subject to the winds that blow almost constantly on the Cyclades Islands so we can say that it is not really suitable for families with children or if you want a quiet day at the beach. On the contrary, it is the perfect place for kitesurfing, suf and windsurt lovers, here, waves are formed (the best ones are from the north) on both sides of the coast but pay close attention to the submerged rocks that can be a serious danger.

Just above the Platkoto beach on the hill of Psathopirgo of the archaeological remains of great importance, it is assumed that here is the Homer's tomb where among other things you can enjoy a fantastic view of the northern part of the island.

Two words on the tomb of the most famous Greek poet. There are several theories surrounding death, one that his death occurred from a trivial fall while he was exploring the island of Ios when Homer returned to his homeland. A second version would be that Homer wanted to be buried right here as his mother Climene was originally from Ios and confirming the veracity of this hypothesis is confirmed by the discovery of an ancient coin depicting the face of Homer and an old manuscript where it is reported a calendar and the name of the poet appears.

The legend, however, tells that he had stopped in Ios during his journey from Samos to Athens and the inhabitants of the island asked him a question to which he was unable to answer so as punishment he was killed. The remains of his tomb that can be seen above the hill is a modest and small building of pale stone dating back to the Hellenistic period which is actually a cenotaph with inscriptions in Greek and a quote "there the earth hides under the sacred head the divine Homer by clear order of the Gods and men ”.

How to get to Plakoto Beach

It is essential to have your own vehicle, there are no buses that go this far, so you will necessarily have to rent a scooter or a car. From the Chora head towards Agia Theodoti until the road becomes dirt. Take the path that branches off to the left and you will have arrived at Plakoto beach. If you continue, you will find another path that will lead you instead to the ruins of Homer's tomb.

A second alternative is by sea with a boat.

A different stage, to be included among the things to see in Ios, to explore a part of still wild territory, where only the sound of the sea will accompany you during your pilgrimage and where you can find corners with a Pulitzer Prize panorama!
