Travelling to Greece with minors

Traveling with your children is a special adventure, full of discoveries, emotions and many unforgettable memories. Taking the little ones around the world is an opportunity to feed their curiosity and openness to new cultures and places. But, when planning a trip abroad with minors, it is essential to organize in advance and have all the documentation in order, to enjoy a peaceful and smooth vacation!

Did you know that, to travel outside the country with children, it is mandatory to have the right documents? It is better to find out in advance, so as to avoid unexpected events at the last minute. A few preparations are enough to leave calm and ready to have fun all together! Here is a short guide on the documents needed for minors.

Documents for Minors: What You Need

According to the guidelines of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, all minors must have a personal travel document: a passport or an identity card valid for expatriation, even if their name is already on their parents’ passport. It is possible to include the parents’ names on the minor’s document, but if this is not possible in time for departure, it is advisable to also bring a birth certificate or a family status certificate, in case it is requested at the borders. Furthermore, it is always useful to consult the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for any updates on the regulations, so as to be sure to have everything you need before the trip.

Accompanying Declaration: When is it Required?

If the minor must travel without parents or up to the age of 14, an accompanying declaration is required that indicates who will accompany the child (which can be a person, an organization or a transport company). This declaration was further regulated in 2014 to ensure greater safety for young travellers and facilitate border controls. You can also enter the names of the accompanying persons and the details of the trip directly in the minor’s passport. In the case of divorced parents, you must have a certified declaration of consent from both parents or guardians.

Stay Updated

To stay informed about any changes, we recommend that you regularly consult the “Viaggiare Sicuri” website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and, for practical information on documents, the website of the State Police.
