Dolmades

The Dolmades, small tasty rolls of the series one leads to the other, are made up of vine leaves stuffed with minced meat, rice, wheat, different types of vegetables and of course the spices that must never be missing.

The word dolma or dolmadakia actually has Turkish origins and means "stuffing". An ancient dish, also mentioned in the Antigone tragedy of Sophocles where they were offered to Creon tyrant and Thebes king, to seduce and calm him down given the angry temperament.

Between appetizer and a first course, the Dolmades are born according to history during the period during the Thebes siege by Alexander the Great in 338 BC as food was scarce and the population cut the food into small parts by wrapping them in vine leaves to have the illusion of eating more.

Instead of vine leaves, cabbage and fig leaves can also be used and can be filled as preferred. Usually the dolmades stuffed with meat are served hot and accompanied by yogurt sauce, the rice ones are cooked in olive oil and should preferably be eaten cold.

A specialty that you absolutely must taste during your holidays in Greece, a bit like moussaka and pita are a symbol of Greek cuisine and in addition they are also delicious.
