Kedrodasos Beach Crete

2 minutes to read

Here we are at one of the last terrestrial paradises of the beautiful Crete Island, the Kedrodasos Beach. We find it close to another jewel, Elafonissi beach, about 80 kilometers southwest of the lively town of Chania.

Its name already speaks volumes, Kedrodasos in Greek means "cedar forest" even if in reality there is not even a shadow of cedars but on the other hand about a hundred acres are covered with delicate juniper of the juniperus oxycedrus species. Very fine clear sand, smooth rocks on the shore, transparent and crystalline water, a sea with surreal colors that change from light blue to electric blue in all shades with almost black spots due to the presence of posidonia that naturally and undisturbed grow on the seabed. The sea level descends very slowly so as to form real natural pools in some sections, tell me if it can't be Eden all of this?

Soft dunes that change shape every time there is a breath of wind, trees sculpted by natural forces as delicate as crystals that dry out during the summer heat making them seem almost dead when in reality they are not at all for which particular attention must be paid and do not touch them to break them, they create an environment with a tropical scent recalling the magical beaches of Lebanon. Precisely for all this good things, the area is protected, here there are no structures and man's hand, only nature in its original state and which must remain so forever. In case you decide to "venture" (and you will understand only when you read how to get to Kedrodasos beach) in this hidden garden, remember to always have the utmost respect by not leaving garbage around, not picking flowers or plants and above all not to break trees.

Needless to say, if you plan to spend a day in this forgotten place, you need to bring everything you need from water and food because within a few kilometers there is absolutely nothing.

Many see in the Kedrodasos beach the other wonder of the Crete Island, the Elafonissi beach before it became so popular and consequently so frequented by tourists. It would be nice to keep some places hidden but unfortunately it is not possible, sooner or later they are found so we try to sensitize people as much as possible in preserving these corners still intact to give future generations the joy of visiting enchanted worlds.

Kedrodasos beach is much loved by campers who manage to get there and also by naturists. Although both activities are prohibited in Greece, some daredevils still resist and go so far as to enjoy so much beauty in almost total isolation. Despite being close to Elafonissi almost constantly beaten by the wind, Kedrodasos beach remains a bit more sheltered, thanks to its favorable position and its morphology.

If you want to be even more alone, the whole area offers wonderful coves accessible only and exclusively on foot. In an easterly direction, the first you meet after the dunes is Pahia Ammoutsa beach (thick beach) the longest. Just a few meters further at the exit of a small stream the Kambi beach and just below the pretty chapel of San Giovanni we find the Kokkino Ammoustaki beach (thick red sand) with a reddish-colored shoreline. We recommend that you take these trails only when there is light because the roads are easily confused as the landscape is very similar everywhere.

How to reach Kedrodasos Beach

Let's start: heading southwest towards Elafonissi. A couple of kilometers before arriving in Elafonissi at a crossroads, turn left where you will walk a bit of road between fruit and vegetable greenhouses. At a certain point the road becomes unpaved but passable even with a normal car (always be very careful and drive slowly anyway). Go always straight until you find a fork, choose the right until you reach a clearing. Here you will have to leave your vehicle and continue straight on foot for about five hundred meters and you will have arrived in the tropics.

What to say again, go there, throw yourself into this incredible discovery of one of the few places of delight left, and woe to you if you do not include it in the list of things to see in Crete.
