Seitan Limania Beach Crete

2 minutes to read

The beautiful Seitan Limania beach, is located about twenty-two kilometers northeast of Chania on the Akrotiri peninsula, two kilometers from the Chordaki village.

The meaning of Seitan Limania derives from two words, the first of Turkish origin which is Devil, the second Greek which is Porti, in the end “The ports of the Devil” but still today we do not know the reason for this name. It is also called San Raphael for the church at the beginning of the gorge, Saint Spyridon for the old temple hidden in the caves in the immediate vicinity and finally also Rizoskloko especially by the locals.

An extremely wild, remote landscape with steep cliffs where the sea influenced by strong sea currents is almost never calm so much so that until a few years ago it was only known by the inhabitants of Crete because the road was paved only a decade ago.

Don't imagine a long stretch of soft sand, Seitan Limania beach is actually wedged into a narrow channel embraced by high cliffs and a coarse white sand beach mixed with pebbles brought from the adjacent quarry by the Diplohahalo canyon. The sea is however amazing with its turquoise blue colors and transparent and crystalline waters.

The seabed drops immediately and the water temperature is quite cold. It should also be emphasized that the sea is never quiet, on the contrary it is almost always rough so 'if you want to swim or two strokes better be an expert swimmer.

In addition to Seitan Limania, there are two other coves but unfortunately it is not possible to reach them as they are stuck in an inaccessible and impossible area so the only consolation is to admire them from above. Here too it is better if you are experienced walkers and climbers because getting there is very dangerous and a real undertaking.

Obviously Seitan Limania beach is not equipped so nothing reigns so 'if you want to spend the whole day here among other things considered one of the most beautiful and wildest beaches in Crete, remember to bring everything you need. Little shade, so if you don't like being in the sun, a shelter like an umbrella will be gold. It should also be noted that the hours full of light are few, on average two hours before sunset it goes into shadow due to the position and the stacks that cover it.

Having become very popular in recent years, it is crowded during peak times, so if you want to enjoy it in peace, it would be better to go there early in the morning.

How to get to Seitan Limania Beach

Let's say that the first part is not difficult at all. Let's start by saying that you need your own vehicle or a taxi as an alternative but clearly it would be better if you shared it otherwise it would cost you a little. With the city of Chania as a reference, head towards the Akrotiri Peninsula to the north east and follow the signs for Rizoskloko. In the middle of the road you will find a sort of gate that is nothing more than an enclosure for the goats of the shepherds who often come to the beach to look for and sometimes even steal food from the bathers. You can open it and pass it through but we recommend that you always close it after your transit.

At this point the paved road begins to descend in the middle of nowhere until it reaches a sort of parking lot. From here a steep and narrow path starts and in this regard we suggest you wear tennis shoes and not flip flops which, within 15 minutes, will lead you to paradise, on Seitan Limania beach. Be careful because there are two paths, do not take the one on the left because it immediately leads to the cliff and impossible to walk.

Certainly not so easy to reach Seitan Limania beach, but believe us all the efforts will be amply rewarded because the landscape is truly beautiful and particular.
