Corfu'

Pelekas and Kaiser's Throne Corfù

2 minutes to read

A small and reserved reality, still far from widespread tourist fame, is the Pelekas village. We are located thirteen kilometers from Kerkyra. On the opposite bank, the western one, compared to the capital of the island. This town, which seems lost in time, came to gain its fame thanks to Kaiser Wilhelm II. Right here, the emperor of Germany and Prussia, the same one who bought the Achilleion of Empress Sissi, went very often during the summer. It is certainly no mystery that the king particularly loved the Corfu island. And at Pelekas he built an observatory from which he admired the views over the island and sat down to meditate. Also known as the Kaiser's Throne.

In fact, the little village enjoys a wonderful position at 270 meters above sea level. A strategic point from which it is possible to enjoy wide views over a large part of the island, the forests and the coasts below. Right on top of the hill on which the town lies, the Kaiser Throne was built, of which only a few remains remain today. However, it can be visited, arriving comfortably by car and leaving it in the parking lot in front of the entrance gate. Being facing west, it is also an excellent point from which to admire romantic sunsets over the sea.

As for Pelekas, you will find it extremely pleasant to stroll through its narrow streets. Surrounded by stone houses with a warm Mediterranean scent. Here everything seems to be stuck in an unspecified point in the past. Its keeping away from the tourist flows of the island has meant that this allure of an ancient time has been preserved. In the hamlet there will be an opportunity to enjoy a meal in one of the Greek tavernas, to taste and breathe something extremely authentic.

Pelekas Beaches

Lying on a hill, Pelekas does not have its own beach. However, there is one that is considered 'his', in some way, given the short distance that separates it from the village. This is Kontogialos beach. Which, for its beauty and comfort, is truly an unmissable attraction for enjoying the sea of Corfù. You can get there by car along a road that stretches, hairpin after hairpin, towards the sea. During the descent, it will be very difficult to take your eyes off the window, with a panorama of the coast that offers fascinating views.

Kontogialos is a large equipped beach, with fine sand and shallow water. Enclosed between two promontories and bathed by very blue waters. Here you can benefit from the convenience of umbrellas and sunbeds, volleyball courts and refreshment services. But also pedal boats and small boats to venture into the water. There is really everything you need to spend a pleasant day at sea.

After passing the promontory south of Kontogialos, you can arrive at a more secluded and less known beach. This is Yaliskari beach. Divided into two parts. One of pebbles and rocks, the other of fine sand. In this second part, you will also find umbrellas to shelter you from the sun. Above the beach, a homonymous tavern is highly appreciated for the availability of fresh fish.

Finally, another important beach near Pelekas is that of Glyfada. A bit like Kontogialos, the conformation is very wide and of comfortable sand. Equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas and various types of services to spend an entire day at the beach. The shallow water and the sheltered bay make it a safe and ideal place even for those traveling with children.
