Cefalonia

Kefalonia Island

2 minutes to read

Kefalonia Island is part of the Ionian Islands Archipelago facing the Corinth Gulf and very close to the coasts of the wonderful Peloponnese. The largest of all its sisters is a much sought after destination especially by families and by those who want a holiday in Greece based on the beautiful sea and many things to visit.

Kefalonia has a very particular morphology ranging from high irregular coasts to gulfs that are born from small bays with coasts of sand so white that it looks like talcum powder with an electric blue sea, to mountains covered by dense vegetation with woods and pine forests. Not by chance, the island is home to many varieties and species of both plants and animals such as the rare black fir and a particular breed of wild horses that roam undisturbed and protected on Mount Enos. This precious and priceless gift from Mother Nature is part of the National Park which deals with the protection and conservation of this still uncontaminated and fundamental environment for the island. And yet picturesque villages and towns with elegant palaces, rural houses and ruins of ancient temples are what to expect from Kefalonia.

Given its dimensions which are by no means small, it is essential in planning a holiday in Kefalonia to choose the place to be the base camp. Based on your availability of time, you can opt for one area rather than another, our advice is that if your stay is for a week, it would be better to stay towards the center so as to be comfortable for getting around the island. If you are among the lucky ones to have two weeks, you could opt for one part to the west and the rest to the east.

It must be said that the island is much loved by the English in fact many have decided to settle permanently as well as many Italians in fact it will not be a surprise to hear our language spoken almost everywhere.

Do not miss the capital Argostoli completely rebuilt after the violent earthquake of 1953 trying to preserve its neoclassical style architecture is a very lively town where you will find a wide choice of taverns, restaurants, shops. Every morning at the port you could also have nice encounters with the caretta-caretta turtles, which lurk around the fishing boats to snag a free meal. Argostoli is located right in the middle of a curious geological phenomenon where the sea disappears between underground tunnels and then appears in the wonderful Melissani Lake fed by both salt and fresh water.

Nearby you can also admire the Drogorati Cave with its large stalactite cave that miraculously escaped part of the earthquake which practically made the roof collapse if we want to call it that of the cave and when the sun is right above it, it creates unique and suggestive lighting effects.

On the hills of Kefalonia a particular grape is produced, the Robola which is then transformed into the famous and homonymous wine famous throughout Greece which you must absolutely try during your stay.

People come here for a quiet holiday, there is nightlife but only in the larger towns and in any case it is never noisy or transgressive. Kefalonia is chosen for its spectacular sea, its beaches and its nature. Lovers of walks will be able to satisfy their pleasures especially in the hinterland where there are several paths up to the top of Mount Einos through a rich and different environment.

Kefalonia is also one of the favorite islands for the nesting of turtles that arrive every year to lay their eggs and continue the species. The beaches where these graceful animals usually love to reproduce are Mounda beach and Koroni beach in the southern part of the island.

It is also possible to take an excursion to the nearby Ithaca island, land of the mythical Ulysses, starting from the port of Sami or from Skala or to the very green Zakynthos, a paradise from all points of view by taking the ship from Poros and/or from Skala.

We advise you to rent a car if you want to visit Kefalonia, there is so much to see and just as much road to cover, it would be a shame to miss out on so many wonders!
