Cefalonia

Getting around in Kefalonia

2 minutes to read

Also in this case it is not exactly a small island, keep in mind that from Fiscardo in the north to Skala in the south it is about eighty kilometers, but above all there are really many things to see in Kefalonia and therefore it is better to optimize the times also based on the dates of your stay.

Let's start by saying that there are many ways to visit the island, it's up to you to choose the one that best suits your needs and tastes.

Car: It doesn't take long to realize that maybe it's the best way. As we said above, the size of Kefalonia is important as well as the distances. Given the possibility of arriving by ship directly from Italy, you could opt to bring your own car or choose to rent it directly on site. I advise you to do it as soon as possible because under the date either they cannot be found or they will shoot you prices much higher than an advance booking. Also considering the fact that the island is all up and down, it certainly remains the best and most comfortable idea. The roads are almost all paved and in good condition so there are zero problems, obviously if you venture onto the dirt road it can become difficult but even in this case it's your choice! In the summer when Kefalonia fills up with visitors, driving becomes more demanding and maybe even a bit slower to reach the places you have decided to see but who cares, you will be blissfully sitting in the car and on vacation.

Scooter: let's say it's a second choice if you don't have four wheels available. It is certainly ideal if you don't have a tight itinerary for your holiday but travel close enough is still your decision, nothing prevents you from taking a vehicle perhaps with an engine capacity of 150 cc or more and getting around the whole island in peace.

Quad: certainly a lot of fun and especially loved by young people. It could be a good alternative even if there aren't many dirt roads in Kefalonia, of course you will have the wind in your hair and you will feel freer but even in this case choose one with a minimum engine capacity of 250 cc.

Public Transport: the public network that covers Kefalonia is very widespread and will allow you to reach all places on the island, even the beaches, almost unbelievable! As in all of Greece it is managed by Ktel and the stations are mainly located on the seafront. It goes without saying that it is essential to study the timetables well in order to organize yourself in the best possible way and that you need to have a lot of patience because times get longer as there may be several stops between where you will leave and your final destination. It doesn't matter that you are always on holiday, so no stress and enjoy every moment.

Curiosity. In Kefalonia, Ktel also has buses that take you to Athens from the island along a stretch of sea.

Ship: from Argostoli in about twenty minutes every day and at different times there are boats that take you to the Peninsula of Paliki and Lixuori an area not to be missed during your holiday in Kefalonia with its beautiful and particular beaches as well as a territory to be discovered. You can also embark your vehicle.

Taxi: the taxi service in Kefalonia is very organized so it will not be difficult to find one. Consider that moving in this way can be very expensive, for example to get from Argostoli to Lixuori costs €80 but if you are willing to share with some other passengers you can reduce the cost.
