Cefalonia

How to get to Kefalonia

2 minutes to read

Kefalonia Island is the largest of the Ionian Islands Archipelagos and has one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, what we say we can even venture to say one of the most beautiful in the way.

From the tragic past, between wars and earthquakes fortunately visible nowadays only in the interesting and unmissable museums, it is a stupendous island with a jagged coast, gulfs and inlets that hide marvelous beaches of soft white sand (the ones that visitors usually look for) , high mountains such as Mount Enos which reaches 1628 meters with its green pine forests and a breed of horses found only here and nowhere else on the globe that live free in the wild, and finally a wild and varied nature so to become a Natural Park.

Its notoriety increases with the now cult film "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" (who hasn't seen it??) which gave Kefalonia great visibility making it a very popular destination for a holiday in Greece.

To reach it, you can choose two ways either by plane or by ferry.

With a flight: to date, during the summer period, there are many airlines, including low-cost ones, that fly from all over Europe to Kefalonia, sometimes even more than once a week. Prices vary according to the period but if you are far-sighted and book early, you will find really advantageous rates. The airport has recently been renovated and today we can say that it lacks nothing. The capital Argostoli is very close, it's a maximum of ten kilometers and with a taxi, spending around twenty euros, you can get there quietly and comfortably.

If you wish, you could also head to Athens airport and from there take a domestic flight (Olympic-Aegean or SkyExpress, the latter being among the cheapest. Definitely longer, but if it's worth it in terms of money, why not?

It should be noted that Kefalonia, given its vastness, is not a small island, it has 5 ports. Fiscardo where ships arrive from Lefkada and sometimes from Ithaca, Sami the main one where ships from Ithaca, Askakos, Italy directly and from Patras dock. Poros which can be reached from Kyllini, Pessada with sections from Zakynthos and Argostoli where you leave to reach Lixouri the wonderful northern part of Kefalonia with its red beaches.

By ship: certainly the journey par excellence. As we always say, when you decide to leave by ship it's always an adventure, it's okay the times get longer but you can definitely experience extraordinary moments and see things that will certainly leave an indelible mark on your memories of your holiday in Kefalonia.

From Bari or Brindisi, ferries leave for the port of Sami. The crossing lasts one night so it would be better especially if you have children to book a cabin. The boat also stops in Corfu' and then reaches Zakynthos. The rides are not every day consult the tables.

Bari: Ventouris Lines http://www.ventourisferries.it/

Second option: from Ancona or Venice to Igoumenitsa or Patras. Let's look at both possibilities:

Igoumenitsa: with your car, follow the entire coast and arrive at the island of Lefkada which is connected to the mainland by a bridge until you reach Nidri where you can embark towards Fiscardo. Navigation time less than two hours

Or but few know it to get to Astakos is two hours by car in a southerly direction compared to Igoumenitsa

And still arriving at the port of Kyllini but we are talking about over 350 kilometers where there are ferries to embark even cars towards the port of Poros in Kefalonia in the south of the island.

Patras: let's start by saying that it takes at least six hours of navigation more than the port of Igoumenitsa.

From here every day there is a boat that leaves at 12.30 in the direction of the port of Sami in Kefalonia which you will reach in about three hours of navigation. This solution is perfect if you are without a car or don't want to make your way by car any longer.

Alternatively if you want, with about an hour's drive you can reach the port of Kyllini where you will find the boats that take you to Poros and where you can also embark for Zakynthos. It takes about an hour and a half to sail.
