Lixouri town Kefalonia

2 minutes to read

Lixouri, is located on the Paliki Peninsula in the north west part of the beautiful Kefalonia island near the ancient town of Paleokastro. It is by extension the second largest city on the island after the capital Argostoli. Even in the winter months Lixuori remains alive and active with any type of service.

It is perhaps the least mountainous area in all of Kefalonia and has a clayey soil that since ancient times has made it very fertile and where agriculture is very productive.

In 1953 a strong earthquake completely destroyed the village which was rebuilt, and today it looks like a modern agglomeration which however has tried to keep as much as possible the traditional aspect of the island. The reconstruction was very fast thanks to the works of local benefactors such as Panayis Valliano who built the professional school, the doctor Stamos Petritsis the gymnasium, the brothers Thanos and Evangelo Mpasià contributed to the reconstruction of many churches while the spouses Panayi and Antonia Mangiavinato gave the 'Hospital. The appearance of Lixouri in our times is with large pedestrian lanes, style buildings, shops that line and fill the alleys of this beautiful tourist resort from the main road, restaurants, hotels, guest houses and bars. The beating center of the village is its huge square facing the port with a majestic ficus tree near the theater where all the maze to be discovered starts.

Some buildings from the historical period, thanks be to God, and others have been restored in a typically island style. A must see in Lixuori are, the Iakovati Palace where the public library is located and the oldest treatise of Hippocrates of 1595 and a collection of 36 icons and three ancient Gospels of the XIV, XV, X century, the church of Pandocrator with its beautiful dome with the icon of Christ, Panagia ton Perligadon which in August organizes a festival with festivals and spectacular fireworks, the church dedicated to Agios Nikolaos and the Church of the Holy Trinity.

According to visitors, Lixouri is also particular for its extremely friendly and hospitable population. In the lively town there is also the Pali Philharmonic School, one of the most important in Greece and the oldest after Corfu. Lixouri also gave birth to the poet Andrea Laskaratos to whom a statue was dedicated right on the beach with his back to Argostoli (between the two cities there has always been and there will always be a strong rivalry).

From Lixouri it is possible to visit the site of "Kounopetra" in the nearby village of Matzavinata, also called "moving stone", a unique natural phenomenon in the world. It is a large rock dating back to the monolithic period about twenty meters wide, a flat that just comes out of the water and that constantly moves from east to west up to twenty times a minute. Up close you don't feel the shift but if you put it directly on the rock, sometimes you feel the vibrations.

In the Paliki peninsula near Lixouri, there are beautiful if not the most beautiful beaches on the island.

How do you reach Lixouri

There are two ways to get to the Paliki Peninsula and reach Lixuori, one is with the car via the mainland, the other instead with a ferry that leaves every hour from Argostoli and arrives at the port of Lixuori certainly the fastest way unless you are vacationing in the north part of the island.

You will find fun in Lixuori everywhere, many typical restaurants such as classic taverns offering local and Greek cuisine, renowned restaurants, street food and many cafés and bars where you can relax for an aperitif or a simple coffee in short you will only have the spoiled for choice.

Basically many things to see in Lixouri and to mark in your travel diary in Kefalonia, dedicate a day to it if you don't stay nearby you will surely be conquered! http://www.kefalonia-island.gr/
