Assos Village Kefalonia
Let's start by saying that the Assos village is ideal for those who want a holiday of total relaxation and the only thought is to have only the sound of the sea as a background.
To reach Assos, you need to have your own transport because there is no public transport to get there. Very close to the wonderful Myrtos beach, this picturesque resort is a unique place on the whole of Kefalonia island.
Completely immersed in greenery and almost as if it had just come out of a fairy tale, it rises above a thin strip of land, bathed on both sides by the sea which joins a promontory. You arrive through a cypress forest and find yourself in a small square with some old houses, some Greek taverns and a small pier for mooring boats. The inhabitants are little more than a hundred and their occupation consists mostly of fishing and tourism.
A real gem with two small pebble beaches but with an extremely clean and crystal clear sea. One is right in the village, with a shallow bottom suitable for families with children where in the summer season it is possible to find some deck chairs and umbrellas. Behind it there are two taverns where you can taste the classic dishes of Kefalonia and Greek cuisine. The second beach instead is on the road leading to the Castle and is not equipped and free.
In the final part of Assos, we find the Castle (Kastro in Greek) built by the Venetians in the late 1500s to protect themselves from pirate attacks and invaders. Today, with a walk, it is possible to reach the ruins and enjoy the wonderful panorama. Near the castle there is also a small church dedicated to the Prophet Elias very dear to the Orthodox.
Assos does not prefer mass tourism so do not expect all the comforts, some taverns where you can eat fresh and genuine, some artisan shops, a mini market and a couple of bars where you can sip perhaps a candlelit drink in absolute quiet .
Surely you will have the impression of having happened in a place forgotten by time but the charm of Assos lies precisely in this feeling where everything seems to have stopped and that it has no intention of moving forward.
