Olympiada Village Northern Chalkidiki

2 minutes to read

Olympiada, the modern Stagira, is located in the north-eastern part of the Chalkidiki Peninsula overlooking the bay of Ierissos about 90 kilometers from Thessaloniki.

Located in an idyllic area where culture, history and nature blend together, offering a multitude of attractions that will never make you feel bored, it has about 650 inhabitants who live mainly from tourism and fishing.

Protected by the Natura 2000 project in recent years it has developed a lot and offers a lot of choice as regards accommodation ranging from hotels to apartments or simple guest houses, taverns where you can always enjoy the freshest fish, restaurants, cafes and shops.

It owes its name to Olympia princess of Epirus as well as wife of Philip II of Macedonia and mother of the great Alexander the Great when she was exiled in this part of the Chalkidiki peninsula. In reality we do not know the real reason for his estrangement from Pella and not even the exact place of his exile, some testimonies say he was in Stagira, other sources instead in Kapros the small island in front of Olympiada which in Greek means wild boar and curious is the fact that in ancient times this animal was depicted on the coins.

Founded in 1923 by refugees from Asia Minor from Agia Kyriaki, in the past it was a swampy area where malaria exterminated entire families, but which despite everything with the commitment of the population has managed to become what we see today.

Olympiada stretches along a beautiful sandy beach awarded every year with the Blue Flag for its clear and crystalline waters with very shallow waters, therefore perfect for families with children. Inside a natural harbor, it is surrounded by evergreen mountains that make the village like a painting with colors that go from emerald to turquoise with a hint of white of the coast.

Nothing is missing here, seven hundred meters from the village the mythical city of Stagira, birthplace of Aristostele with its very important archaeological site and one of the most beautiful in Greece, the Aristotle Park where children and young people can touch thanks to interactive itineraries the charm of history, for nature lovers walks and two campsites where to take an alternative holiday in Greece and a discreet nightlife thanks also to the Archaia Association which during the summer offers events and celebrations to make known and preserve ancient traditions.

Also worth visiting is the central church Agia Kyriaki which on the 7th of July is celebrated with a picturesque festival together with the mussel festival. In August, theatrical events and shows for young and old are organized. However, there is no shortage of places where to have an aperitif or for an after dinner.

How to get to the Olympiada village

From Thessaloniki just take the Egnatia Odos / EO Thessalonikis-Kavalas road, while if you are engaged in an itinerant holiday always head north east.

Definitely an interesting place after you can combine relaxing days on the beach with a truly fantastic sea and with all the main comforts, culture, history and good food. To be noted in the notebook among the things to see in the Northern Chalkidiki Peninsula.
