2 minutes to read

As we explained in the section on how to reach Amorgos, you will have understood that getting here is a real journey that acts as a deterrent to mass tourism, thus making it a perfect island for those who want a holiday in Greece based on relaxation and pristine nature.

Even though it is often blown by the wind, it too has many beautiful beaches where you can bask in the sun and enjoy the benefits of the sea, some a bit challenging to reach, others much simpler but all with a common denominator, a fabulous landscape and a sea second to none.

Here are the main ones to visit during your holiday in Amorgos, a multifaceted island full of unique beauties where getting bored will be really difficult.

Northern part

Aegiali and Levrossos Beach

Aegiali beach and Levrossos beach are located on the west coast of Amorgos both near the lively town of Aegiali. The first is precisely the coast of the homonymous village made of soft gold-colored sand with large trees behind it which are a real godsend especially during the hottest hours of the day. It is not equipped at all, you can hang your towel where you feel most inspired while as regards the restaurant across the street you will have to choose which tavern to sit in rather than which bar to stop for something fresh to drink or eat. Just after Aegiali is the beach of Levrossos about twenty minutes walk where naturists love to meet. Also of soft sand with clean and crystalline waters with a gently sloping seabed.

Agios Pavlos Beach

Agios Pavlos beach is on the west side and it is a sandy shore mixed with small white stones with crystalline, transparent and calm waters given its position that shelters it from the winds, a turquoise sea, emerald up to deep blue with which slope down so they are perfect for families with children and for those who love to take long swims. It is partially equipped while an area is totally free. Diving and snorkelling lovers will find a small paradise here given the vivacity of its marine fauna and flora. Boats leave every day for a nice excursion to the desert Nikouria island.

Nikouria Island

Together with Gramvousa Island it is the second satellite island of Amorgos. It overlooks of Aegiali bay right in front of the Agios Pavlos beach, the point from which you start to reach it by sea. It has three beaches that are still natural and uncontaminated, one is long while the other two have a smaller coastline. All of golden sand with some rocks that emerge from the Aegean as if by magic, crystalline and clear waters, ideal for snorkeling but remember that they are colder than other coves. Not at all equipped if you decide to spend the day remember to bring everything you need to eat, hydrate and shelter from the sun.

Psili Ammos Beach

Psili Ammos beach is located on the east coast just two kilometers from Aegiali bay just after Levressos beach. A small strip of sand that gives space to a few people so first come first serve with clean, transparent waters and a sea that goes from turquoise to deep blue. Behind trees where you can find refreshment in the hottest moments of the day. It is not equipped with any comforts so take the necessary precautions and bring everything you need. It can be reached either by sea or on foot, there are no other alternatives. Given its position, it is almost always protected from the Meltemi, therefore perfect for a relaxing day at the beach.

South part

Morou Beach

We find Morou beach in the southern part of Amorgos to the east between the Kamari and Arkesini villages. A pebble beach with glassy and crystalline waters and two fantastic underwater caves all to be explored if you are an expert swimmer. Snorkelers will have plenty of fun discovering the underwater world so put fins, a mask, a snorkel and an underwater camera in your backpack to immortalize the inhabitants of the abyss. It is not equipped but high up near the parking lot there is a cafeteria and a restaurant with a wonderful panorama where you can find something fresh to drink and tasty to eat.

Maltezi Beach

Maltezi beach is on the west coast. A coast of soft sand with a sea of green and bluish colors with clean and transparent waters with depths that descend slowly, therefore perfect for families with children. Its position shelters it from the winds also thanks to the gentle slopes which protect it like a tender embrace. In one area there are rocks and stone slabs, an environment suitable for snorkelers. It is equipped for a part with umbrellas and sunbeds while an area is totally free. Given its atmosphere and its environment, it is also a favorite destination for naturists. As for catering, a small bar is open during the summer for something quick to eat and refreshing drinks.

Agia Anna Beach

Perhaps the best known thanks to the set of the cult film "Le Grand Blu" by Luc Besson where he shot some beautiful scenes. We find it to the east about two kilometers from the capital Chora. Light colored gravel, crystal clear waters and an intense blue sea are what to expect from Agia Anna beach. It is not equipped at all and not really suitable for children as there are many rocks that become dangerous and slippery. Not far away is the Monastery of Hozoviotissa which dominates the landscape like a guardian. If you love walking, a beautiful path starts from the Chora and in an hour you reach the beach passing by the Monastery. The view is something indescribable and your effort will be rewarded by a landscape that you will hardly forget. If, on the other hand, you are more “comfortable” you can get there either by car or by public bus.

Agioi Saranta Beach

Agioi Saranta beach (forty saints this is its meaning) is located on the left side of the natural Katapola port on the west coast. A coast of coarse sand bathed by clean, clear waters and an intense blue sea with a seabed that descends very quickly therefore not suitable for children and inexperienced swimmers. Here 'no comfort and not even natural shade so if you decide to spend the day be careful to bring everything you need to protect yourself from the sun, drink and eat. Despite its beauty, it is almost always quiet and chosen by those who just want relaxation and privacy.

Kato Kampos Beach

Kato Kampos beach is right on the extreme southwest tip in a picturesque gulf not far from the Kolofana village. A beach of golden sand with the presence of numerous rocks, fresh and clean waters, a blue sea perfect for swimming. A graceful chapel at its end completes it like a fine Greek picture. It is not equipped, you can put yourself wherever you like, while a small kiosk is open for a drink or something to eat during the summer season.

Agios Panteleimon Beach

Agios Panteleimon beach whose name owes it to the chapel on its coast is located southwest not far from the town of Katapola. A sandy beach, an access blue sea and crystalline waters. It is not equipped indeed we can define it as an extremely wild place so remember to arrive equipped with everything you need for a sunny day. It can be reached either by sea, or with your own transport up to Maltezi beach and then on foot or with a half hour walk. Agios Panteleimon beach is usually chosen not so much for its beauty which is not among the most spectacular of Amorgos but for its absolute tranquility where you can spend peaceful hours without too much noise.

Kalotaritissa Beach

Kalotaritissa BEACH also to the west offers its visitors a very long coastline made of coarse sand mixed with small gravel with numerous trees behind it that give natural shade when necessary. A beautiful amphitheater-shaped bay with clear and clean waters, an intense blue sea where fishermen gather as the seabed is full of fish. It is not equipped so you can sit wherever you prefer while for catering there is a kiosk offering refreshing drinks and quick snacks. From Kalotaritissa beach, boats leave for the beautiful Gramvousa island.

Gramvousa Island

Gramvousa is the second satellite of Amorgos island and is located just in front of Kaloritissa beach. In the days of marauders it was the perfect refuge for its sheltered bay which protected them when the winds picked up making navigation difficult. Wild, uncontaminated and at times hostile, definitively abandoned not long ago by the last two brothers who chose a comfortable life rather than hard work, it offers its visitors two splendid beaches of sand mixed with pebbles with a sea to scream with passing colors from emerald to turquoise to blue, clean and transparent waters even if a little cold and a wonderful seabed to be explored by snorkelers. No services in Gramvousa much less shade so if you want to venture for a whole day, bring all the equipment. It goes without saying that it can only be reached by sea, even if an alternative exists and consists in renting a canoe or a pedal boat but only for those who are trained because although it seems close, rowing and pedaling is not that easy.

Paradise Beach

Paradisia beach is located near the Kalotaritsa village about fifteen kilometers southwest of the capital Chora. A coastline gathered in a small bay with golden sand mixed with small stones, completely surrounded by rocks and fragrant Mediterranean scrub. Clear and transparent waters with a bright turquoise color perfect for exploring the seabed. It is not equipped, everything is in its original state, therefore ideal for those who love nature and do-it-yourself.

Katapola Beach

Certainly not the most beautiful but certainly the most comfortable if you have opted to stay here for your holiday in Amorgos. It is located right in the bustling tourist resort of Katapola, in one of the seven natural harbors of the Cyclades Islands. It has a very long beach, a clean and always calm sea given its position, soft sand and natural shade thanks to the trees that frame it. Behind a wide choice of taverns, bars, restaurants for a drink or something to eat. Nearby with a walk you can reach the Acropolis of Minoa and the beaches of Agios Panteleimon and Maltezi beach.
