Katapola Amorgos

The lively and picturesque town of Katapola, we find it in the southern part on the west side of the magical Amorgos about six kilometers from the capital Chora.

It is the main port of the island (the other we find in Aegiali in the north-western part about twenty kilometers away) and is wedged in a large bay in the most 'verdant part of Amorgos, a narrow natural inlet considered one of the most' beautiful Aegean where many boats love to anchor to stay sheltered from the winds and enjoy so much beauty.

The area is divided into three settlements, Katapola, Rachidi and Xilokeraditi all with a particular charm and things to see. Katapola presents itself with its wonderful windmills, traditional houses painted with white lime, the blue windows and other bright colors like the typical architecture of the Cyclades Islands wants, from the cobbled streets lined with fruit trees and fragrant citrus plants. , a real postcard! Also not to be missed is the old Venetian castle and the church of Panagia Katapoliani built over a basilica dating back to the pre-Christian era and next to the archaic temple of Apollo. The district of Xilokeratidi instead is located right in front of the port on the right side and is considered the most picturesque with its narrow streets and traditional taverns where you can enjoy excellent food based on ancient and local recipes. A small path for a walk to follow up to the tombs of the Mycenaean period and the church of Evangelistra from the Byzantine period. From Xilokeratidi also taking another route, you reach the chapel of Agios Panteleimos with its delightful and peaceful beach.

Like almost every seaside town, Katapola also has its own beach, perhaps not one of the most beautiful but certainly convenient for those staying nearby and unwilling to do discovery for a day.
