Megalo Mourtias Beach Alonissos

2 minutes to read

Megalo Mourtias beach is found in the southwestern part of the Alonissos island, about three kilometers from the capital Patitiri and less than two kilometers from the old city of Chora.

A small pearl of the southern area perfect for those staying nearby and not wanting to explore the area for a day. A shoreline of pebbles bathed by crystal clear and clean waters, so much so that it almost looks like a swimming pool, with a pebble bottom at the beginning and then gradually becoming sandy as you enter.

It is equipped with umbrellas and sunbeds, plus a couple of excellent taverns where you can find something fresh to drink and delicious dishes to eat. During the high season it is not overcrowded but not so lonely, if you are looking for a place to really stay in peace it is better to move to Valitsa beach a bit more west.

Since the beach is totally pebble, we recommend that you bring rock shoes if you have delicate feet and even better if you have an air mattress to lie down and sunbathe if you decide not to use the paid equipment. We would also like to point out that given the conformation of the bay, when boats such as the ferries that connect Alonissos with the other islands pass by, waves are often formed so 'avoid placing yourself right on the seashore with your towel to avoid crazy races and avoid getting everything wet.

As for the restaurant, we suggest you stop at the Taverna Megalo Mourtia, immersed in an olive grove and directly on the beach with the sea that almost reaches the stairs, it is truly a magnificent place. Here you can enjoy excellent dishes based on fresh fish such as spaghetti with lobster or the sublime fish soup, or imaginative appetizers all accompanied by excellent ouzo or tsipouro. The prices are fair and have an excellent quality-price ratio.

However, let's say that this part of Alonissos is really very beautiful and extremely wild, from the Megalo Mourtias beach through some paths that are sometimes a bit challenging, so much so that you have to climb and do a continuous up and down, it is possible to reach small coves where you will be only you and total privacy is assured. Do it only if you are an expert walker because it can 'be a bit dangerous and being the area quite remote, few people decide to go as far as here'.

How to reach Megalo Mourtias Beach

There are several options for reaching Megalo Mourtias beach. As always, the most comfortable is with a rental vehicle which can be either a car or a scooter. Keeping Patitiri as a reference point, take a south-west direction, follow the road signs towards Marpounta beach and at a certain point you will find a turning sign towards the west that says Megalo Mourtias up to a public parking where you can leave your vehicle. A second way is by taxi maybe if you are lucky enough to share with someone else to share the expense.

Third alternative by sea. Every day from Patitiri boats or boats depart which arrive directly at the beach in the area in charge of the boats and which at specific times shuttle back and forth.

Last choice but in our opinion the best, on foot. Keep in mind that it takes about twenty minutes from the old village of the Chora and the beauty of this walk is the fact that it crosses paths that offer incredible landscapes. In this regard, we anticipate that on the way back, the road is a bit uphill but still feasible.

An island that never ceases to offer fantastic and new things to discover and Megalo Mourtias deserves to be included among the things to see in Alonissos even just for a lunch or even better a dinner.
