Megali Ammos Beach Alonissos

2 minutes to read

Megali Ammos Beach, we find it on the southwest side of the beautiful Alonissos Island about ten kilometers from the capital Patitiri.

Its name Megali Ammos which in Greek means large sand, let's say that it doesn't hit us right because first of all it is not so extensive indeed it is rather contained and much less the coast is sandy but rather small light-colored pebbles. However, all this does not detract from the fact that it is a wonderful and completely unspoiled piece of Alonissos.

The sea is of a bright turquoise color with blue shades, with extremely transparent and clean waters, while the seabed unlike many other beaches descends quite quickly therefore not really suitable for families with children but perfect for those who love long swims and for snorkelers who can find hidden marine wonders on the coast.

An enchanting bay embraced by a luxuriant Mediterranean scrub, wild and with a natural and unique beauty that offers moments of pure serenity. For one part it is equipped with umbrellas and sunbeds that cost about € 10 per day, cared for by Jannis, a gentleman who, in addition to keeping everything for him, will also be able to offer you something to eat or drink. There are no catering services, and due to the lack of comfort and urbanization this area is still intact and untouched, and in this regard we advise you if you decide to spend the whole day at Megali Ammos beach to bring you everything you need and to always have the utmost respect by not leaving garbage around.

A curiosity about Megali Ammos beach ... the monk seals present in the Alonissos National Marine Park particularly love to bask under the sun in this little corner of paradise and it will not be difficult to spot them and maybe they will spend the day near you to rest and enjoy so much goodwill from Mother Nature. Being wild animals, be careful they may not like your enthusiasm so we recommend that you do not get too close so as not to disturb them.

The Megali Ammos area is a continuous succession of splendid coves, one more beautiful than the other, where you can come across idyllic pastures and remain in absolute privacy. Another peculiarity is linked to archeology, as bones belonging to a large prehistoric animal have been found not far from the beach. Alonissos is a very popular destination for paleontologists by virtue of the fact that it has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the findings in the Kastraki area, the internal section of the island.

For those who love walking, we would like to point out that just after Tourkoneri beach there are two other beautiful beaches connected to each other by a half-kilometer long path surrounded by the pine forest that flanks the coast above sea level. It should also be noted that in this part of Alonissos there are other fantastic beaches such as Tsakalia beach, Mikros Mourtias beach and Vrisitsa beach.

How to get to Megali Ammos Beach

Let's say that it is quite challenging given the remote location. It would be better to have a quad or a 4x4 as the road for a good quarter of an hour is unpaved with holes and sharp bends but being careful even with a scooter or a normal car it is possible to get there. So, following the road signs towards the south-west side, you will reach an open space where you can leave the vehicle and then continue on foot for about two hundred meters downhill and you will have reached your destination.

A small adventure is the visit to the beach of Megali Ammos if we want to call it that way, but which is worthy of note among the things to see in Alonissos.
