Gerakas Beach Alonissos

The Gerakas Beach, we can say that it is the last in the northern part of the wonderful and eclectic Alonissos as well as the most remote. We find it more than twenty kilometers from the capital Patitiri and you have to cross the whole island.

In an almost deserted area inside a picturesque natural harbor enclosed in a bay well protected from the winds, we find this beach with a beach of small white stones bathed by clean and crystalline blue-green waters. The seabed drops quite quickly therefore not really suitable for families with children.

Rarely crowded either because of the position, or because certainly not the most comfortable place to spend a sunny day, during the summer it has a few sun beds and umbrellas for only € 5 and as a restaurant service, you will find a classic Greek "kantina". For those who still do not know it, Kantina in Greece is a caravan used as a kitchen where you usually eat very well, because everything is based on the freshest products of the day, with prices that are sometimes much lower than the classic taverns. Surely a “free range” solution but the beauty is also this to be discovered during the holidays in Greece, unusual places where you can breathe the true Hellenic spirit.

Gerakas beach is used mainly by local fishermen especially in the tuna fishing season as it is a safe corner near the fishing area where the waters are deeper and you can find big fish. Even the rescue boats and small ships take refuge in the bay in case of bad weather so as to remain safe and wait for Aeolus to stop being angry in order to then be able to safely resume navigation.

The Marine Research Station was once located, which was responsible for the study and protection of the Mediterranean Monachus Monachus seals. To date, unfortunately, it has been closed due to lack of funds, a real shame! However, with a little luck you can find a guardian who will be very happy to let you visit the place.

You need to have a private vehicle that is a car or a scooter, there is no difference. Keeping Patitiri as a reference point, head north east for more than twenty kilometers on the main asphalted road. Follow the signs and in about forty minutes you will arrive at Gerakas beach.

One of the most beautiful things is the journey, you will pass right in the middle of the island through very beautiful landscapes and panoramas, where you can also meet local people and shepherds with their flocks and enjoy the rural atmosphere of the island.

In our opinion, an itinerary to be included on the things to see in Alonissos, not so much for the beach as final purpose, but for everything you will find to get to the beach.
