Alonissos Island

The Alonissos Island formerly called Ikos, we can say that it is one of the most remote islands to reach for your holiday in Greece, but which will give you a landscape that will leave you breathless with its waters considered among the cleanest in the world of Aegean, a luxuriant vegetation where trekking lovers can discover hidden corners, beaches where you can let yourself be carried away by the sound of the waves and villages with an almost enchanted atmosphere.

Alonissos is well known as the first Marine Park in Greece was established in 1992, a protected area where you can find endangered marine fauna and flora such as the Monachus – Monachus seal which, right in these waters and among the its caves has found refuge and reproduces under the constant and careful supervision of associations such as Mom which take care of these nice little animals and guarantee their survival as well as the continuity of the species. On the island you can also find over three hundred types of animals such as dolphins, whales and very rare corals. Alonissos is also an important migratory crossroads where numerous birds and butterflies pass and stop every year.

The song of the cicadas is one of the constant sounds of the Alonissos Island, throughout the day they will accompany you from the seashore to the fairy woods or olive groves. The fauna here is luxuriant and generous, you can find large oak pine forests and shrubs as well as a Mediterranean scrub that will inebriate your senses with its herbs and wild flowers.

The colors that characterize Alonissos are green and blue which, in contrast to the white beaches mostly made of small pebbles, make the landscape almost like a painted picture.

The coasts where you can enjoy long hours of idleness and under the warm rays of the sun are mostly found on the east coast. Quiet and almost hidden, they offer each visitor their own corner of paradise. There are some equipped, others completely wild and will satisfy any taste. The most particular is undoubtedly the Kokkinkastro beach with a red granite promontory that plunges directly into the Aegean giving it reflections that you will be able to see nowhere else.

For those who love to go in search of the soul of Alonissos, certainly can not miss its beautiful villages such as the ancient Chora called Palià Alonissos once the capital of the island which was destroyed following a devastating earthquake forcing the natives to move towards the sea where Patitiri capital was born today, or Steni Vala a typical fishing village reaching Kalamakia where you can eat fabulous spaghetti with lobster and then end up in Patitiri landing place where you can taste delicious sweets and products from the oven and from which very interesting excursions leave every day to places to be discovered or to go to the nearby islands.

In conclusion, Alonissos is an island that will give you surprises in every corner, but remember you only come here for a holiday of relaxation and discovery but above all you will have to be very patient because the conception of time is typically Greek, indeed perhaps even more amplified so everything will be sigà sigà (slowly) without stress and without pretensions.
