Tyropita the disputed Alonissos Cheese Cake

If you decide to move from the Alonissos island, I recommend you do not miss the opportunity to eat the Tyropita. It is a goat cheese cake wrapped in a thin, lightly fried fillo dough. Both cold and hot is a real pleasure and once tried believe me you will not be able to do without it.

To date, there is a great dispute over the authorship of the Tyropita between the Alonissos island and the Skopelos island. The story told by the inhabitants of Alonissos is that in the 50s when unfortunately the wine industry of the island collapsed, they sought another use in the nearby island of Skopelos famous for its plums and the reason for migration was precisely the collection of these fruits. The workers for lunch consumed the incriminated cake and slowly the inhabitants of Skopelos also began to prepare it thus making it a local specialty.

On the contrary, the inhabitants of Skopelos claim that the Tyropita was prepared by chance for the children as a pre-snack while the mothers were intent on cooking the Spanakopita another type of savory pie always wrapped in filo pastry but filled with spinach and cheese goat (a real delight I love I eat in industrial quantities). With leftover pasta from Spanakopita and cheese that is never missing in Greece, to silence the little ones they invented this wonder.

Anyone who is right will never know (in Greece it is normal for people to contend for the exclusive on things from one village to another, do not worry) but it is certain that I personally thank everyone who created the Tyropita and invite you to try it at least once in your life.
